Cool legato exercise

Try doing this in a loop starting out slow and building up speed. It gives my left hand a major work out since it's on the lower strings and lower on the fretboard.

Re: Cool legato exercise

Thats actually quite similar to an exercise I took from a Jani Liimatainen video.

It's got even biger stretches, since it's based on the pentatonic scale. Those two D's make it sound pretty interesting too.

And to build on that, here's a string skipping lick, with a tap

You've gotta really make sure you've got your muting sorted out before you can play that one clean.

Anyway, have fun.

Re: Cool legato exercise

There are no specific muting excercises, just excercises that are more likely to produce unwanted noises therefore forcing you to improve your muting.

Watch what your right hand is doing at the bridge, but also use your left hand fingers to mute unwanted strings, especially the ones either side of the string you're playing. For example, when youre moving from the 5th to 4th string, make sure you have the 5th string muted by the palm of your right hand as soon as you move off it so it doesn't ring out. Likewise, use the underside of your left hand fingers to mute the 3rd string while playing on the 4th.

There are many approaches to it, that's just my way.

Those legato excercises are as good as any for working on it.
