Re: Do you memorize the fretboard?

You really should do this as soon as possible.

Knowing all the notes on the fretboard makes learning and applying other knowledge much easier.

Rock on!

Re: Do you memorize the fretboard?

I use a combination of knowledge and also relative notes (for example if I play a note, sometimes I'll play the fifth an octave down subconsciously by playing two frets down on the string above it). But yeah, I memorized it. It comes with LOTS of practice.

Re: Do you memorize the fretboard?

It just comes with practice. When you're playing a lick for instance, don't just memorize the lick, but know what notes you are actually playing. That's how I learn.

Re: Do you memorize the fretboard?

Yes it's absolutely invaluable.

Next time you're noodling, look at your fingers and say the notes in your head, when you're away from your guitar, close your eyes and see an imaginary neck, then work out notes on it.

I used to sit on the bus travelling back from high school doing this, or any time I was bored/waiting for something, now when I play guitar and I look down at my fingers I can't imagine not instinctively knowing what the notes are, it's strange But very doable.

Re: Do you memorize the fretboard?

No. I don't really memorize the fretboard in this way. I know all the note names but I don't think about them while playing. I just play and my hands fall into place as if by magic.

Hmmm. Just how magical would you say your hands are on a scale from 1-10? Just curious. hehehe
