E minor penta = G major penta etcetc

Hello,

I was practicing today and a friend of mine told me: you know that the E minor Penta you're playing you can use it as a G major penta and do this and that?

"hummm... no..."

I really feel I am really bad at theory as I am a self taught guitar player (and I thought that I could be a guitar god by just staring at the instrument when i was a teenager ).

I used to learn licks, chords and a couple of scales and I feel I am very limitated in my approach of the instrument now.

So I am starting from 0 by re-learning the notes on my fretboard instead of just playing chords and scales... I also just ordered Doug Doppler's dvd. from what i heard it's a good dvd to start with.

but: do you guys know a good website that explains the basics of scales, modes, chords progression? how do scales relate to each other? (for instance: the E minor penta = G major penta etcetc)

Maybe we could list a few with a rating for people who 'd like to start learning the guitar or strengthen their knowledge of musical theory.

thanks!

Learn your circle of 5ths first, that will tell you everything you need to know regarding Major/relative minor and modal applications. Think of the circle of 5ths as your basic multiplication tables - without that memorized first, advanced math, later, is very difficult.

This site helped me:

http://www.theorylessons.com/index.html

The G major pentatonic is just the second position of the E minor pentatonic. So although you are playing what looks like a G major pentatonic, if you are resolving to E every time, you are really in fact just playing the E minor pentatonic in a different position.
