I'd argue that guitar wouldn't be the same period. He brought the guitar out of the parlors and turned it into a viable instrument for solo. Not only did he arrange classics for the guitar, but composed original pieces made for the guitar itself. He was the first in the line of innovators, IMHO.

He was a classical guitar genious nothing else and while an innovator in his own right (Listen to "Concierto de aranjuez for a taste) he is not what you make him out to be! you are exagerating a bit here!

I'd say we just disagree then since there is no way to say otherwise. (Since we have no way of knowing what the guitar world would be like without him)
So I respect your opinion, but I would have to disagree.
