Re: Exotic Scales/modes

I make my own ones up, so to say. I just find interesting intervals and try to fit them within an octave. Then I'd try to learn the scale on the whole neck and figure out some chord voicings, it's a lot of fun...

Re: Exotic Scales/modes

I tend to find a nice sounding scale and then work out the modes for it, a good one to start on is the harmonic minor, one of it's modes is phrygian dominant which is a very cool scale for metal/shredding, but then there are other more interesting ones.

Re: Exotic Scales/modes

You can make loads easily. If you look at them like chords, altering one note, such as lowering the third or something, the whole thing can be made to sound exotic. You can find quite a few around the web, but quite a few I have found are just diatonic scales with notes missed out. If you find the Japanese ones they are the best sounding in my opinion!

Re: Exotic Scales/modes

My favorite is Gypsy scale which is a one note alteration of harmonic minor.

The full fretboard find of of my site http://www.guitarknowledgenet.com has most of the scales mentioned here and a bunch of other ones.

Re: Exotic Scales/modes

The modes of the Melodic minor scale are very useful in many ways. Gives you a few extra notes to pick from.
