Favorite exotic scales?
One of my faves is "Locrian 6#" - E F G A Bb C# D - a modal scale of harmonic minor.
It has a nice phrygian touch.

BTW, the above example has the same notes as D harmonic major or A phrygian dominant, but over an E root.

Very nice dude! I've tinkered with that before for sure. Check this one out:
Hungarian Gypsy/Persian in A, 1,b2,3,4,5,b6,7, A, A#, C#, D, E, F, G#
E|-------------------------------4-5------
B|--------------------------5-6-----------
G|---------------------6-7-----------------
D|--------------6-7-8------------------------
A|-----4-5-7-8-----------------------------------
E|-5-6-----------------------------------------

Re: Favorite exotic scales?
My favourite is harmonic minor.
I'm really boring I guess.
I've never been able to get into most funny scales, they always sound incomplete or the root doesn't 'sound' like the 'root'.
Though I am a fan of whole tone and diminished (Both the arppegios and the whole step half step format)

Lydian mode. Simple, but I love it.

Re: Favorite exotic scales?
I'm a fan of the diminished and wholetone scales. They seem too short/long respectively, and I rather like the sounds of diminished and augmented chords.

Yes, it is a great scale, I've already used it in some of my solos. Btw, if your play it over a D root, it becomes the so called Hungarian Minor:
D, E, F, G#, A, Bb, C#, D - it is a harmonic minor with a raised 4th.

Re: Favorite exotic scales?
The Enigmatic mode is a cool one. I'll normally play it when I'm warming up. It's a good tongue twister for the fingers. I found it in an article Satch did in one of the guitar mags years ago. He based one of his early songs on it:
1 b2 3 #4 #5 #6 7
you end up with 4 notes that are a half step apart.

Reminds me of Ritchie's play off Hungarian Dance #5 in Spotlight Kid...

Re: Favorite exotic scales?
It's a tie between Harmonic minor (Of course) and a hybrid scale I figured out from learning alot of Marty Friedman material, it's basically a simple blues scale with added dorian elements, there's most likely a name for it but I've never come across it.

Re: Favorite exotic scales?
I've been messing around with Hungarian Minor lately. I heard satch talking about it in his Musterion Podcast. The song is based around C Hungarian Minor.
Hungarian Minor is Harmonic Minor #4
-edit
looks like someone already mentioned it ^^

Re: Favorite exotic scales?
I like the Spanish-Flamenco scale. 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 b7. Of course I like to play it in A but root it over E.
Which with some quick math would prove to be:
E F G A Bb C# D E
which is ofcourse the Locrian #6. Haha.
