Guitar Lessons changed my life

Okay, well, maybe not changed my life, but are helping out my playing.

I'm offering guitar lessons to raise money for charity; I'm going out to Tanzania in the summer to help build a dining at a local primary school in Lerang'wa (which my school is affiliated with) and need to raise two and a half grand.

The first thing I thought was, "Great, everyone loves the guitar, so I'll do lessons".

Now, my second student is a 6 year old guy, who's had lessons before but can't remember anything. So, I'm starting off by reteaching him how to learn music, before teaching him some really simple songs, which has of course meant that I need to relearn it myself. I've found that teaching this kid is actually really helping me and just thought I'd recommend it to anyone interested.

I've also devised a great plan for learning all the modes, but none of my students are ready for it yet, and I actually haven't tried it out yet; it's still just a theory.

Also, while I'm on topic, I'm based in Surrey, UK, just in case anyone is interested

Yeah, I've also found it that when you have to explain something from scratch, you first need to clear out everything in your head. Once you've done that, you apply some child psychology so your lessons become intuitive games to them from which they, unknowingly, learn and, voila!, you've grown as a musician and as a person.

I learned somewhere that the most effective way to learn something is to teach it.

Obviously, you can't teach something you're totally ignorant of, but once you know the basics, explaining it to someone else is the best way for you to master it.

The least effective way to learn something is the traditional classroom lecture.
