Guitar Transposition

Hi,

As you all I know, my theory sucks.

Does anyone have any tutorials on transposition. I cant seem to find any.

Well actually iam trying to transpose this very simple( http://www.911tabs.com/link/?330373 ) from what i believe is F# to F. It would be best if anyone could directly help me with transposing the song.

Thanks

Re: Guitar Transposition

I'm not sure that song is in F# - it looks to me like the resolution of the chords is E or possibly A (subdominant?). Also, the key F# would have A# in it, not A natural. Are you sure that's the right link? maybe you meant to link to another song?

Either way, transposing keys isn't so bad - you just take the notes and their respective degrees, then you use those same degrees in a the desired scale. For instance, a I, IV, V in F# would be F#, B, C#. If you wanted to change this to F, you would take the same degrees of the scale, but just use a new key signature - so using F (scale: F, G, A, Bb, C, D, E), the NEW I, IV, V would be F, Bb, C, dig?

Re: Guitar Transposition

Oh thanks, I think i understand a little more.
Your right, it is in E. Ok so if its from E -> F then.

Everything will become a semi-tone higher?

Pretty much - you'll be playing with the new key signature, but the same note degrees. In this case, everything is moved up a minor second (semitone).

So instead of four sharps (F, C, G, D), you'll be using just Bb as an accidental. The chord E will be replaced with an F chord, A (the fifth degree aka dominant of the original E key) would be replaced with the new dominant of the new key, Bb. B, the sixth degree of E, would be replaced with the sixth degree of the key of F, which is a C.

I assumed you wanted to change it from E maj to F maj.

Hope this helps, I'm not great at theory, but I believe that's all correct. Any more questions - ask away

Re: Guitar Transposition

If there was a D# in the original key. Does it change to E or does it stay at D? Because the accidently is removed then it changes 1 semitone up.
