How do I know in which mode I'm playing?

I've recorded a simple backing track with some drums and an easy rhytm part based on D. I use this to practice my scales. I know all the modes and when practicing I just run over the whole the fretboard.

the modes I use are G-Ionic, A-Dorian, B-Phrygian, C-Lydian, D-Mixolydian, E-Aeolian & F#-Locrian

Or for a different feeling I can move the scales up and start from the A-Ionic, B-Dorian, C#-Phrygian, D-Lydian, E-Mixolydian, F#-Aeolian and G#-Locrian.

in the first example I tend to start-finish my licks on the note G, and in the second example I start-finish a lot on the note A.

I don't know how to tell which mode/scale I'm using. Do I look at the note I use a lot in the scales, or do I look at the rhytm part to tell my friends what I'm playing? So in the first example, do I say " I'm playing in D-Mixolydian" or do I say "I'm playing G-Ionic/major" ?

I hope my question is clear, if not, please feel free to ask (or ignore ).

Re: How do I know in which mode I'm playing?

If ur using an E minor (aeolian) scale but the rythme is using G as it's 'home' chord or key, I wud say "I'm playing in G major." But if the rythme is using something like an A as it's 'home' key or chord, I'd say "I'm playing in A Dorian." In my opinion the rythme in contrast with the lead is what gives the effect if 'basic' chords are used. E.g, E major (or major 7) chord with the lead in an E lydian (or B major if that's easier) would give the effect of lydian. Hope that helps dude, take it easy

Jonny is right, it depends on the chords behind what you're playing.
