I need help with economy picking...

Ok, I have some pretty serious chops (yes ****y, sorry lol), and my legato technique is pretty fluid and swift. but I notice when I try to do eric johnson style pentatonics, I just cant do it. I suck at economy picking...

anyone have any good advice on how to practice? I practice these styles, but i feel like im not getting any ground on this

edit : wow, cant believe ****y is edited out hahaha

I suggest to take it real slow and then increase the speed while practising . Do a backing track that goes from 60 bpm to 100 for let's say 10 minutes or more. Then when u can do it perfectly change the starting and ending tempo.

For most of us, there are things that we suck at no matter how much we practice, it certanly is that way with me. Maybe that tecnique just isn't ment for you? There are lots of other ways to make your guitar express music

Re: I need help with economy picking...

I guess there's some truth to that Morten. Economy picking has always been more comfortable to me. I used to worry about it and see it as a "weakness", but now I just see it as one of my many proclivities. I'm not advocating you abandon econo picking to stick with alternate, but certain things will feel more natural to you.

Is it the sweep motion or the combination of alternate to sweep that's throwing you off?

I would suggest trying some basic scalar/arpeggio patterns sticking with two notes on two strings to start. Work at it slowly and build speed as per usual.
