I wanna get into Jazz...

Hey,

I want to start listening/playing some jazz but I don't know where to start. Can anybody recommend some good CDs to listen to (doesn't have to be guitar based) and some materials to help me start to playing Jazz. The stuff in Guitar Techniques is to advanced for me to start with so kinda something that begins with the basics of playing Jazz.

Many Thanks

Reece

Re: I wanna get into Jazz...

Here is another thread with some jazz guitar recommendations:

http://www.jemsite.com/forums/showth...highlight=jazz

There is tons of great jazz out there - and tons of different traditions/sub-genres/periods as well, so you obviously have to do some listening to find out what you enjoy the most. It's a lot like asking what you should listen to if you want to get into "Rock" - some people will tell you to listen to the Stones, others will tell you to listen to Smashing Pumpkins, and yet others will tell you to Whitesnake.

Album recommendations, as far as relatively "straight" jazz goes:

Miles Davis - "Kind of Blue'
Charles Mingus - "Mingus Ah Um"
John Coltrane - "Blue Train"
Thelonious Monk - "Monk's Music"
Jim Hall & Ron Carter - "Alone Together"
V.S.O.P - "Tempest in the Colloseum"
Pat Martino - "Live at Yoshi's"

...and slightly more demanding, but a personal favourite and IMO some of the greatest music ever recorded:

John Coltrane - "A Love Supreme"

"A Love Supreme" - Coltrane
"A Kind of Blue" - Miles Davis

As everyone says. These are also my favorite all-around Jazz. If you're looking to play guitar-jazz, check out Fusion. It's really interesting rock/jazz stuff that IMO is worth looking at.

Fwiw, Shawn Lane is amazing (I'll be the first to confirm it), but it is not "jazz" in the traditional sense. Holdsworth's music is much closer, but if you really want to "get" it, it is better to go to the same sources that Allan or Shawn did, namely Parker, Coltrane, Tatum, etc. What you do with it is your choice, but it is good to get closer to the source.

I kinda want to learn both as they are both taking my interest.

I'm gonna check out Miles Davis and see what I think.

Thanks for all your suggestions!

Re: I wanna get into Jazz...

Here's a couple more:

Dave Brubeck - whatever album has "Take Five" on it
Pat Metheny - Still Life Talking
Mike Stern - Standards and other Songs (I think that's the title)
Anything by John Scofield
Lee Ritenour's "Wes Bound" (a fantastic tribute album to jazz giant Wes Montgomery)

BUT, your first choice (Kind of Blue) is the perfect start - buy the best remastered copy you can find - apparently the cheapo CD was mastered a bit slow, and is a semitone flat!

Cheers

David

Re: I wanna get into Jazz...

theres a CD called "the best blue note album in the world.. EVER!" which is superb, and has lots of different artists doing different sorts of jazz, that would be my recommended starting point
