Instructional videos

Which do you prefer those that cover specific techniques or general playing?

I'm refering to these basicaly

http://www.licklibrary.com/ProductDe...wwsPxVliDiM%3d
http://www.licklibrary.com/ProductDe...y03fTDjdeBg%3d

and

http://www.licklibrary.com/ProductDe...jviZsRVJAAU%3d
http://www.licklibrary.com/ProductDe...nqQH7I4I8nI%3d

I know there are areas of my technique that could be improved (all of them actually just some need it more than others) but I've got John Petrucci's Rock Discipline which covers multiple techniques and found it to be very good and wasn't sure if i should try some more specific DVD's. Any advice as well as your opinions would be really helpfull.

Re: Instructional videos

Frank Gambale comes highly recommended ...so does Danny Gill.

Personally, I don't really appreciate Stuart Bull's stuff but you might...

But check out Doug Doppler...a great teacher, check his site out.

You are just prejudiced because he is an Aussie!
In reality Frank is a monster player and a gifted musician!

May I also suggest Scott Henderson! he is a great tutor too!

Re: Instructional videos

Not that I'm biased (far from it) but I reckon the "best" guitarist (if there can ever be such a thing) is from the UK -- Allan Holdsworth! But then again it's hard to pick (craptacular unintentional pun alert) between Allan Holdsworth and Shawn Lane (Memphis, TN). The UK also has some downright scary talent right now in the name of Guthrie Govan. As for Australia, damn they have some amazing players too; Brett Garsed and Frank Gambale to name but two. Overall, though, it's gotta be Holdsworth. He may not appeal to everyone here, but there's simply no questioning his skill level and technique.

I've got the Doppler DVD - get it off e-bay $50 inc shipping.

It isn't intimidating to watch - Doug explains thing very well. You can't really play along with it, you need to watch, go and practice with the enclosed paper lesson plans then come back to the DVD.

I like holdsworth but some times it seems he goes over the top with his rhythm changes in an effort to be more progressive.

Re: Instructional videos

Well I ended up getting; All you need to know about Sweep Picking by Stuart Bull, All you need to know about Two hand tapping by Stuart Bull and Playing with feel by Dave Kilminster. I'm going off to watch these now I'll give a review of them after the weekend.
Sadly I could not find Diatonic Theory & Harmony.

Based purely on technique, I'll put Holdsworth over Lane any day of the week.

Oh and, if you wanna see somebody that can match Govan blow for blow, check out Joel Hoekstra. Killer tone too.

As for videos, I tend to prefer the ones that give you an insight into creative processes and improv.

Re: Instructional videos

If you dug the Petrucci dvd, I'd suggest any of the Gilbert dvds or Steve Morse dvds.. If you're looking to diversify a little I'd also suggest Warren Haynes electric blues and slide. A lot of the Young Guitar stuff is out there available on YouTube and such..Google Video too.
