Japanese Music - Any knowledge?

Do any of you guys know anything about Japanese music? Things like what time signatures are used mostly and what the music is used for (dance, performance, etc.). Any info would be appreciated because I'm writing a song in Japanese style sing pentatonic scales and other Japanese type methods. Thanks

I think that Vai's burning rain is using some of the Japanese scales and ideas so if you haven't done so listen to it.
