Cool

Joe Satriani Alternate Picking ?!?!

people say hes a shred head... but the only "shred" ive heard him play is probably legato, and the occasional arpeggio (mystical potato head groove thing). is there any songs/videos in which he alternate picks? (or as most teenage guitar playing wannabes would say, Shreds?)

thanks

Re: Joe Satriani Alternate Picking ?!?!

Theres parts of his song "Crushing Day" which has alternate picking in it during some scale runs, but most of satch's stuff is legato rather than alternate.

A few years back someone accused me of having "Satriani syndrome" because my alternate picking wasn't that great compared to my legato lol.

Then again im sure Satch is great at it, he probably just prefers the feel of his legato.

Re: Joe Satriani Alternate Picking ?!?!

I wouldn't say legato is easier than alternate, or the other way around. But Satch has a great legato technique. Or at least he was miles ahead 20 years ago in the instrumental rock genre.

For me, Satch is more about music than showcase, and if he plays too many notes for you to follow, then it's shred. If you can follow him and understands what he does - then you probably don't think of it as shred (shred being a bad thing in this context).

well, satch's legato technique is pretty shoddy at the moment, an i agree, it was miles better 20 years ago.

Also, i bet hes really gutted that he taught Vai to play guitar, and now hes better than him.... lol.

Re: Joe Satriani Alternate Picking ?!?!

I agree with Euph.

Satch has got some nice picking runs but it's not really his style to pick blisteringly ala Paul Gilbert.

PG for me is all about the picking, baby. I really enjoy trying to play it at home and I own most of his instructional DVDs (they're my favourites) but when it comes to music like melody and overall sound, I'd rather look to Satch.

I love Satch's legato runs in Mystical Potatohead and many other tracks...

However, I wouldn't mind him chucking a few hard-hitting picking phrases in his music now and then...there's an idea Joe!

Ps: Change it up Joe!

Better is subjective, i dont think anyone can beat satch's phrasing.

His legato stuff on the Crystal planet album was all pretty hot, that was only like 1998 i think.

Listen to Time, last time i saw him live he still nailed all the legato, i wouldnt call it shoddy

Re: Joe Satriani Alternate Picking ?!?!

i have one of PG's instructionals, Teriffying guitar trip? its great even though there isnt a lot of teaching going on, e.g. that flamingo thing.

back on subject, IMO satriani has really fecked up recently, especially on Super Collosal. So has many others, like Vai, Metallica e.t.c.

Vais latest album reflections is just a rip off of other songs hes done, an it sucks.

Re: Joe Satriani Alternate Picking ?!?!

Check John Petrucci's Rock Discipline, that has some good alternate picking exercises.

its funy that you edited your post for a typo but still spelt it wrong lol.

yeah thats basically a faster version of the Rock Discipline exercise, and it actually warms up your hands unlike the Petrucci one.

There's also a very cool alternate picking part in that solo. The "Live in San Francisco" version is awesome!
