John Petrucci's video

hey guys, i just bought his instructional dvd and it should arrive tomorrow. Is this any good? and does it have tab/notation with it? because i hate having to look really closely to see what guitarists are playing.

The only thing i've seen from this before is John playing some fast alternate picking lick. Both with distortion and without, it's so clean and precise it's unbelievable.

Speaking in terms of understandability and teaching quality; this really is the best DVD I've seen. John is soooo at ease. The excercises are really fine and clear too. No-nonsense. (except for the 'who is Petrucci? intermezzos' maybe, I like 'm though)

It's my favorite one

Re: John Petrucci's video

I think Rock Discipline is one of the better instructional videos out there, the chapters are really well organised too. He covers alot in the 2 hours, and not just various techniques. He covers chord progressions and how you can add orchestration to common power chords; what notes to add etc. He talks about his practice routine as well as his influences and his musical background, and there is a really cool part at the end where he shows all his gear.

As for all techniques, he covers legato, alternate picking and sweep picking, which is covered briefly. The examples are played at a really slow tempo, which always helps. He explains how to increase your tempo using his method, as well as covering metronome use and subdividing the beat.

At the begining he even shows some masaging to ease up tension and get the blood flowing. There is quite a few warm up excercises too.

On the DVD there is also some footage of G3 which was recorded a few years ago, which is a nice bonus.

It's an expensive DVD, but well worth it in my opinion.

Oh and yes, it does come with tab/notation, it's not on screen though, comes in a small book.

This instructional is the way to go in terms of snyching up your technique to the next level. Picking, legato, string skipping etc...everything is there for you to develop monster chops.

However if you're looking to improve your note choice and pharsing I'd recommend a couple of instructionals by Gambale and Scott Henderson.

Have fun!

Re: John Petrucci's video

I didn't really like Eric Johnson's video that much. :-/

Rock Discipline is an excellent, top-notch instructional video, though. You'll love it. I especially love his 'jam in D minor" around the 55 minute mark or so, 'cause it applies only the things he has so far covered in the DVD, assuming you can play them correctly. It's great.

I just wish Joe Satriani and Steve Vai would put out their own instructional DVD, at least two to three times longer than Rock Discipline. =|

Any good? It's what I base my life on

To be honest, it's the best instructional video I've ever seen. The ideas are simple enough that the average guitar player can understand and use them, and the playing examples are hard enough to challenge even the best players. How Petrucci arranges his ideas is also very intelligent and organized.

Very true on both counts. I was never too much into Petrucci's playing, but it is a very good instructional for what it's intended to do.
