K'm Pee Du Wee is the New Stairway to Heaven!!

I had a thought the other day, everytime I go into a guitar shop, I grab a guitar from the wall and play some mindless chords, or start widdling some legato stuff (never tapping!!!)to tryout the guitar.....And it suddnely dawned on me...

For All these years people go into guitar shops and play stairway to heaven which has been banned in some shops, and the guys behind the counter always think you are a loser.....well I went into a guitar shop yesterday to try out another Ibanez and started playing K'm pee du wee on this lovely marshall and all the guys in the guitar shop looked over, then one by one they came over and wanted to help, they all commented and said "did you write that" and made me feel like a guitarist and not some bonehead guy who just strums for the fun of it......

K'm pee du wee is my new Stairway to heaven(even tho I never played it), it is one of those pieces that sounds good just you and a guitar!!

What piece do you play when you go into a guitar shop????????
(please dont say tapping!!!!hehehe)

Re: K'm Pee Du Wee is the New Stairway to Heaven!!

I usually play a song I wrote (well, it's really just an idea at this stage, not a full song) as an exercise to see if I could write something like "Summer Song".

I also play "Midnight" by Satch, which always makes the young kids' jaws drop.

Then I just noodle around using different modes and styles, including tapping, subtle whammy work, etc. Basically I try to try out every style that I play to see how the guitar suits me.

Anyway, I'm really going to have to learn K'm Pee Du Wee, because it really is an awesome song.

Re: K'm Pee Du Wee is the New Stairway to Heaven!!

I have my own 60-second long (or so) piece I wrote specifically for when I'm in a music store. It involves a ton of high-speed, clean two-handed tapping (that's my fave and most-polished technique). I've practiced it so much since I wrote it (some 14 years ago) that I can play it no matter what - I've played it at parties when I was in college. I'd be so drunk that I didn't remember playing it! People would tell me I played my guitar (and played it well!) and I'd have no recollection of it...

Now that I have a digital recording studio at home, and I'm working on my first solo CD recording ever, I've taken that riff and it's going to serve as a bridge between two songs on my CD.

I learned "Stairway" 15 years ago when I was taking lessons early on in my training. I love to play it, but I will not... ever... play it outside my house. I think the only other riff that's been abused as much as "Stairway" has to be "Ironman"...

I have a medley of junk I typically play, some single string stuff then a chunk of Bach something-or-other from The Well Tempered Clavier (bass part only) joined up with part of Joe Stump's "The Sorceror's Apprentice" which leads into a bit of that Mercyful Fate medley that Metallica did on Garage Inc, which leads into The Prince (Diamondhead/Metallica).

I usually start playing DT - EROTOMANIA from the beginning.
And it never stops!
Maybe in the middle of the hardest solo part (that i can't play w/o 30 min exercises), LOL!
After 2 min, there are a LOT of people around just to see if i'll do something wrong.
The LIMIT is just the WRONG note!
When it happens, i just start to complaining:
__ Ohh, i can't play this thing just like John: need to pratice more! LOL!

Usually when I go into a guitar shop I don't play anything on them because there are no lefties .

Funny, one time I played Stairway in a shop and the guy though it was so good he started doing backing. And that was in one of the shops that banned it. Usually I play either Cliffs of Dover or Zap by Eric Johnson.

I bust out George Benson runs, bebop ****, and chord melody arrangements I wrote of standards. My favorite is a funky Mile's "So What"

Re: K'm Pee Du Wee is the New Stairway to Heaven!!

Well I'm still a newb, so I generally just play whatever I'm learning at the time but I never play more than a few riffs of one song. Then I just bust into random stuff that I make up on the spot and really beat the crap out of the guitar to see if it can take it. And if someone else is playing something in the store, then I try and play along with them (lead or rhythm - whichever applies). And then after I've beat the crap out of the guitar for atleast a good 30 minutes, I end with some real generic chords to see how well the guitar has held its tuning.

I use Technical Difficulties - Racer X. It seems to turn that look of "what do you want" into "How can I help you sir?".

hehe

Re: K'm Pee Du Wee is the New Stairway to Heaven!!

Paul Gilbert - Gilberto Concerto, I play the three guitar tracks at the same time with my toes and have my eyes closed...

Nah, just kidding...The only time I played in a guitarshop was that time I bought my first one (guitar; not a guitarshop )...there was not much technique in the house back then so I can't name what I played, call it noodles. I bought the other guitar from my guitar teacher.

Aha, ditto on the Serrana Arpeggios, *if* my pinky will stretch to the 22nd on the A string... If not, then Altitudes

When i'm messing with the guitar volume, I usually play 'Tender Surrender', although one person called me a 'damned jazzer' when I was playing that. Moron.

Playing Eugenes Trick Bag seems to get everyone's atention

Re: K'm Pee Du Wee is the New Stairway to Heaven!!

When I went to buy the Behringer X V-Amp, I thought I'd test it for a while (even though I was gonna get it one way or another). I played some Vai licks and not even one of them took notice! Yet when I played some Metallica riffs. Some older guys were staring at me!

Young Malaysian guitarsits nowadays:

Vai-Who? (no offence to those who listen to Vai)
Metallica-Yes! Play this in a guitar store and you will be respected!
