Re: learning the fretboard?

You look at the fretboard and say GOD theres 144 places to touch my neck (for 24 fret guitars, not including harmonic spots) and you think you are never going to learn it all, but then you realize.. Hey! when the 12th fret rolls by everything is the same again!.. so each day go over the first 5 frets on the E A D G and B strings, remember theres 2 E's which means you only need to learn 5 strings! and then go over the next 5, and so on.

Re: learning the fretboard?

I picked up a good tip from a Satriani lesson book. He used to set a metronome to a very slow click and then choose a note (for instance 'C'). He would then play this note along to the click in all the positions. Once completed, he would go on immediately to another note, maybe 'D' and do the same process until every note had been covered.
I found it good to choose a scale or pattern (chromatic scale, cycle of 5th's, cycle of 4th's) and then follow that until all notes were covered.

Re: learning the fretboard?

An instructional dvd set you might want to check out would be Rusty Cooley's Fretboard autopsy. I don't have it but it looks very promising. If one person was to teach me how to learn the fretboard, I would certainly want it to be Rusty, regardless of whether or not you like his playing.

I'd check out a bunch of reviews first, of course, just to get other people's view of the dvd set.
