Learning to make guitars/amps etc???

Okay, I'm not sure where to post this, but here seemed reasonable. I'm really interested in learning about how guitars and amps etc work and designing them. Does anybody have any idea how to go about doing that?

I live in the UK, and I am doing A-level physics so I know a thing or too about electronics, though I'm no expert.

(BTW I live ten minutes from Marshall Amplification HQ as a matter of interest)

I just took delivery of both these books today, so I haven't read them through, but from the parts i skimmed both authors seem to really know their stuff
