Lesson 12: *Pachabel's Canon - sweep picking, tapping, arpeg

OK, this song is an old favorite for wedding and other gatherings. *Whether you knew it at the time or not, you have heard Pachabel's Canon. *It's based upon a few arpeggios and it is often played on piano, but it's a beautiful piece that we can use sweep picking and tapping on.

Here's the basic idea:

-------------14-17-14---------|------------9-12-9--------|
----------15----------15------|---------10--------10-----|
-------14----------------14---|-------9--------------9---|
----16----------------------16|----11------------------11|
-17---------------------------|-12-----------------------|
------------------------------|--------------------------|

so, as you can see, the basic idea here is to pedal through a number of different chords. *Before I tab out the whole song, let's add a little bit of detail here. *Some of you may have automatically seen that line and decided to sweep pick it, but if not, try it. *It will take a little work, especially on the next couple of lines as the arpeggio shape spreads out a little.

A few tips on sweeping
* keep you hold on the pick light
* drag it across the strings, not picking each one
* focus on making your fingerings as accurate as possible

Also, let's add a little tapping here too. *Look how I modified the original phrase.

-------------14-17-t22-14---------|------------9-12-t21-9--------|
----------15--------------15------|---------10------------10-----|
-------14--------------------14---|-------9------------------9---|
----16--------------------------16|----11----------------------11|
-17-------------------------------|-12---------------------------|
----------------------------------|------------------------------|

This along the lines of how I'm going to work up the final piece, although I'll probably add a few more little phrases...so let's do it..

Lesson 12: *Pachabel's Canon

Speaking of canon's, I remember a cool one.

It's from "Headcuttin' Duel" in the Crossroads Suite. *It's referred to as a "round", "circle" or "perpetual canon". *Use some heavy delay with a single note repeat on the first section (a la Vai) for that true Crossroads feel. *:-)
(*= bend up a 1/4 step)
