Lesson or Riff 2 "Sweeping diminished arpeggios" - So you sa
So you say you want to be Yngwie?
Well here is a little something to get you started on your way.
Like all good classical music (or old movies with no words), diminished chords and arpeggios are as common as a root 5th chord for rock and roll.
Go to:
http://www.rikksguitarlessons.cjb.net
to get the text file and mpeg video examples of this riff/exercise.
Diminished chords are comprised of the 1, flat 3, and flat 5. Most will add the 6 in there as well to make a "full" sounding sweep as I put in the text file.
Diminished chords will harmonize with themselves every 3 frets so you can sweep into eternity chromatically by completing a run of 3 arpeggios and then starting over a half step up. This makes a cool sounding "neo-classical" solo or a neat little "try a new guitar out in a store" riff.
Anyhow have fun with them. These examples are for a *beginner to intermediate level player but can be easily modified to advanced level by adding other harmonizing arpeggios as well as "taps" into it.
Peace Love and Good Happiness Stuff,
Rikk

I can't get the lessons right now (stupid GeoCities traffic limit), but a couple things of note:
Old movies with no words also feature the strange-sounding augmented chord, whose construction is root, major 3rd, raised 5th. Consecutive major thirds (as opposed to the consec. minor thirds in diminished chords.)
Also, in this case, the fourth note is not the 6th, but rather the bb7th. The chord you would be arpeggiating with those four notes is a dim7 (º7), not a dim6.

Correct on the old movies. The augmented chord was used but it was not as predominant as the diminished. You could hear it most on te movies with someone tied to a train track. The evil villain's music was almost always diminished

I am actually using the 6th as a passing tone rather than part of the arpeggio itself so instead of a bb7 (which is a 6) it would then just be a "F"dim.
Bb or A#........ tomato or tomahto

Gotcha.
I didn't mean to come off as really nit-picky, sorry if I did. I'm just a theory geek, that's all.

* * Just a little nit-picky theory thing: *when talking about a fully diminshed seventh chord, it is preferable to call the top note a doubly-flatted seventh, not a sixth.

Tomato Tomahto
Everyone has a different way of calling it. Heck though if we stuck with "Classical theory" Rock and Roll would not even exist because Classical theory dictates that a chord MUST comprise of 3 notes (or to be more exact) have a 3rd in it. Most rock and roll songs from the 60's on up used root 5th chords comprised of only 2 notes (The 1 and the 5). Now its true that without the 3rd you can not tell if it is major or minor unless you have all the other chords around it to tell you the key but hey...... thats rock and roll!! *
