lydian chord prog

hey has anyone got a nice lchord progression that really make the lydian mode stand out with its dreamy sound?

I wrote this song many years ago - this is just the solo section of a much longer piece of music. Very Vai-influenced - I wrote it when i was at Berklee.

Just put a nice laid-back groove under it and go to town. i've spent many a happy hour jamming over this.

It's 3am and i just scratched this out for ya. let me know if it's legible.

I'm playing around with this amp i'm going to use for a gig tonight...I might pick up one of my own (this is a loaner). Anyway, i thought I'd record a little of my noodling on this chord progression.

It's a little different than the chart i wrote - I went to the Gb every other time, like a 2nd ending.

If you tell anybody this is me playing, i'll deny it.

Lydian scale is like a Major scale with the 4th raised a half-step.

For lydian, you take the root, raise it a 4th and start your scale there.

DOes that make sense? for example

For the notes of C Lydian, play a C scale
(C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C)

but start on F
(F, G, A, B, C, D, E, F)

I don't know how to better explain it than that. Anybody?

didn't u just describe playing in F lydian?

because F G A B C D E is an F major scale with a raised 4th (therefore making it lydian)

I thought to play C lydian.....

u can take the G major scale and start at the 4th note, which is C.

G A B C D E F#----> C D E F# G A B

Or am I wrong?

I am sorta thinking off the top of my head here

Or just to simplify....modes can be interpreted as.....

-starting at a different point of a major scale

-a major scale with notes changed

-or a pentatonic scale with notes added

You're right - i described F lydian. and your example is right by the same principle.

Hey Bar Hook...

Sorry if I'm off base, but I think what you're asking is, what Lydian scale is Kenny playing over the chords, right?

Well, the answer is he plays C Lydian over the C maj 7 chords, Eb Lydian over the Eb chords, and Gb Lydian over the Gb chords... so he switches scales depending on which chord is being played by the accompaniment. Does that answer your question?

Now, if you're confused about what a lydian scale is, I'll give you the other way of thinking about it. Lydian is a Major scale with the fourth note raised a half step (one fret).

So...
For C major the notes would be C D E F# G A B
For Eb the notes would be Eb F G A Bb C D
For Gb the notes would be Gb Ab Bb C Db Eb F

The other way to think about this and what the other guys were saying is that:
C Lydian is also the same notes as G Major but you start on the 4th degree.

Eb is the same notes as Bb but you start on the 4th degree.

Gb is the same notes as Db but you start on the 4th degree.

Hope that clears up some issues!
