Re: Metronome, or not metronome, that be the ?

So if I want to work with the drum machine and/or metronome how do I do this when my guitar teacher is giving everything to me as chord fret shapes patterns. I know how to count time with musical notation, and I could probably fake it with tab, but not sure what to do with fret patterns? HELP ME!!! I'm used to time signature with musical notation, so I'm out of my realm here.

Re: Metronome, or not metronome, that be the ?

I maybe had the luck to have a guitar teacher that teached a music that requires good timing. Wich are romantic songs called "boleros", wich alternate between the bass string and the three lower strings. What im trying to say is that youre guitar teacher should help you out a litlle more in creating lick or rythms wich will help you. Once you learn it youll practically never forget it.

If you want some rythm try this.

B
1
2
3
B:Bass string alternate between 6th string and 5th string.
1,2,3:would be your fingers playing simultaneously string 1,2 and 3

Hope this helps.

Another thing, go to this site www.jguitar.com. Choose any scale and try to play them acording to the tick of the metronome.

Re: Metronome, or not metronome, that be the ?

I'm surprised no one else has asked this - but why do you have to choose between joining a band and practising with a metronome - the metronome will teach you something about playing in unwaivering time, but it will teach you absolutely nothing about feel - playing ahead, or behind the beat, and it will teach you nothing about interaction and communication with other musicians - and those skills you only learn by plating with other people, so you owe it to yourself as a growing player to do both.

Besides, playing in a band is the most fun you can have standing up in any case!

Re: Metronome, or not metronome, that be the ?

Use a metronome to practice hitting notes EXACTLY when they need to be hit. It's painful, long, and tedious, but it produces amazing results. I swear by one myself; I tell EVERYONE thatfile:///usr/share/ubuntu-artwork/home/index.html I've tought that a metronome is possibly the most useful tool for timing and getting difficult speeds.

In fact, I take clips of Vai songs and play them at half speed, then play them at that speed (or slower) and use the metronome to bring it up to what he plays it at.

A metronome is ESPECIALLY helpful if you're dealing with delays. The Edge (of U2) uses the delay pedal as a part of his sound, they're almost synonymous nowadays. If you were to hear a clip of him playing the song without the delay pedal, it would sound NOTHING like the original. Go here: http://www.amnesta.net/edge_delay/ and listen to some of the songs (if you know any of them, if not hear the original first). You'll be quite amazed at how the Edge uses the delay.

So basically, yeah, a metronome is very helpful.

Re: Metronome, or not metronome, that be the ?

I always had one of those cheap casio keyboards with a cheesy drum section to play along with. As crappy as it sounded it worked great and beats (no pun intended) using a metronome.

If you don't have a drum maching or plan to buy one a metronome is the next best thing.

My college music teacher used to always say, "Beat is not a vegetable".

I like the saying, "Timing is EVERYTHING". It really is (conception, big bang theory, music,ect.).

I have same problem. I practice with drum machine, backing tracks etc and still making timing mistake on long solos. So I started practicing with metronome and my gal friend complaints that it’s like some weird sound from Chinese horror movies, so I have to stop it

Re: Metronome, or not metronome, that be the ?

The hard thing with a metronome is doing the divisions when the BPMs go higher, but i guess if one practices with it frequently it will come naturally. I can do 8th,16th,etc. But man its hard when it goes faster.

Am I using it right, because sometimes i hear people just playing on the beat instead of playing it as 16th notes, anyone help me?
