Modes!!

Hi guys, I'm trying to get some more info on modes. I've had a look on google but not found anywhere good that explains them and how to use them. Does anyone have any links they could post for me? Major and minor scales are getting pretty boring!

Thanks.

Re: Modes!!

I think so. My understanding was that it was a scale started from a different point...

Sorry all, i'll use the search...

Re: Modes!!

it's all good. search is your best friend around here as there is sooo much info already posted and a lot of members don't like to repost the same info all the time.
you are right - the modes are just sarting at a different point within a scale. ex)
start on the second note of a major scale and you have the dorian mode.
the best way to get the sound and feel of each is to record your self playing a simple progression over and over using one of the modes and then solo over it using the appropriate mode.
the progression can be simple and just repeated over and over to get the feel of the mode. the progression will in fact give you a certain "flavor" by just using it's chords or intervals to make up a progression.
the third step in a major scale is phrygian and it has a latin feel to it with the first interval being a half step from the root. dorian and aeolian are two of the more used scales for minor rock playing and i usually play between those two and some of the blues or minor pentatonic scale when i solo over minor rock progressions.
recording yourself playing a rhythm and soloing over it is the easiest way to hear the sounds and actually try them out. i spent countless hours playing tons of different progressions into a tape recorder and going back and playing over top of them to help learn modes and build chops. in fact, i still do. if you have a small keyboard with drums or a drum machine it is important to use it so you build your timing and good rhythm. hope this helps some.

Re: Modes!!

when i want to look up a scale or mode i go into guitar pro, click on the scales function and i've got more modes than i ever need, also you can change how many strings you have (6/7 string or more!) what tuning you are in (even your own funky one if it may be) and what key so your pretty much set.
