The key of "C" is the only key with no sharps or flats. Check out the Circle of Fifth's. All theory revolves around the key of "C". All shapes, patterns and steps work of "C" and then shift to the other keys. Hope this helps.

thanks guru, yeah i read up on the circle 5ths in the book i'm currently going through i understood that concept and managed to apply it to work out scales. i'll re-read that section though to brush up.
