Need help picking out a Satch song to learn??

Just curious what's a good Satch tune to start out with? Something fun but not to difficult, and also not to fast? Thx.

I started learning to play and record by learning satch covers.

the first one was just an exercise in learning to 4-track, and that was "hill of the skull" - dull and boring to listen to, but fun to make.

to be honest, they've pretty much all got tricky bits in. I think the next one I did was "echo", but I don't think I made a very good job of it. (I'd only been playing a year or two at this time...)

most of "up in the sky" from crystal planet is pretty simple apart from the fast harmonics - those are a bit of a bitch!

other ones I've learned without too much trouble are: "surfing with the alien", "summer song", "satch boogie", "circles", "back to shalla-bal" and "one big rush".

of course, I bought all the tab books, and that makes things much easier...

hope that helps a bit,

ist a good page for satch tabs when i 1st started learning his stuff i just did the sections of songs i could and then go back to the hard bits when uget a bit better

I find its good to really push yourself and try to play along to every song on every CD... it doesnt matter if you cant PLAY it exactly, improvise!!! you soon start to fall into 'Satch MODE' and suddenly the odd lick/riff/lead/tap/scrape etc etc will fill itself in... then... when you are ready, [this is where I am begining to get ] either a) buy a tab book with comprehensive solo structure etc. or b) slow the tracks down and learn them by ear...

But that's no fun!! comming up with your own Satch-esque solos is much more exhillerating (sp?) then for a twist.. try and play something completley different by someone like Stevie Ray Vaughn and brush up your blues improvisation, as that is something that the majority of players can do straight out of the box...

and one more thing LEGATO LEGATO LEGATO!!!!

I really like "Flying in a Blue Dream" (the song). It's dead easy, other than parts of the solos, but it gives you a good lesson in feel and melody. There's also a lot of room to interpret it and stretch out a bit.

Satch boogie will give you a good workout, and Devil's Slide isn't nearly as hard as it sounds.
