No matter how much I try

It's not working!!! OK here's my problem, I want to strengthen my fret hand. I read an article with John Petrucci and he recommended a few exercises. Basically he said to begin by taking only 3 notes on one string and playing them using a metronome and gradually building up speed. I have been doing this quite often as well as the ole 1, 2, 3, 4 up and down the neck exercises. I will say my fret hand burns and feels like its being worked during the exercise, but I still can't seem to build any speed. And, my ring and pinky are still weaker then I'd like. Lastly, my picking hand doesn't seem to stay in sync with the fret hand, in that, it wants to go faste (as if it had a mind of its own lol). Could someone help me out here? I apologize if this subject has been covered before, I did check out the search link and read through some older threads, but wanted to get a fresh opinion from you experts. Thanks.

Hey jkeith!

I know exactly what you're talking about, its a common issue when trying to develop alternate picking speed.

Have you started your metronome speed really slow, then attempted to increase it over time? To get your muscles used to such intensive, focused action, you probably need to keep doing those exercises at a really slow speed (like 8th notes at 60 bpm, for example) and after about a week of practicing between 30 minutes to an hour (or longer), push it up a few bpm the next week or few days, and so on...

You'll probably notice that after you reach something like 16th notes at 120 bpm or something in that range, your picking hand is alot steadier and your fingers fret with alot more accuracy and clarity. You will, of course, want to practice alot of other exercises with this to increase dexterity, independance, and other techniques besides just picking (legato playing, sweeping, chords--probably the most ignored technique--, string skipping, etc.)

The best way to learn techniques is also to learn to play a piece. Not necessarily a rock/shred piece, mind you, but a jazz or classical piece arranged for guitar would probably help more, as its not as "instinctive," so you'll have to push your technique farther and develop more.

Good luck man, and if I didn't answer your question... you get a full refund! LOL

Patience, young Skywalker.

Just work on it, it'll come to you sooner or later. One of my favorite quotes is from Mick Goodrick: "in about 15 to 20 years, it gets a bit better."

And like Pryde said, work on some music as well. Transcribe stuff and learn what you transcribed, that's always good for many things, if you don't believe me, ask Vai!
