Re: No More Downloading From Powertab

that ****

I dont see how it breaks the law, it provides a website that provides peoples interpretation of the song in the TAB format, so others can play along with the songs.

Im sure most people would buy the tab books if they wanted the album, instead of using powertab.net

This is courtesy of the RIAA and the idiots that control and feed this organization. Next up, charging for lyrics from iTunes...

Music Industry to Attack Lyric, Tab Sites
By Ed Oswald, BetaNews
December 12, 2005, 4:07 PM

The litigious music industry will have a new target in 2006: sites that provide lyrics and scores to popular songs. The Music Publishers' Association says fines and the removal of such Web sites is not enough -- it is even advocating jail time for those operating these sites.

MPA President Lauren Keiser told the BBC Monday that he thought if the MPA would be successful in "[throwing] in some jail time I think we'll be a little more effective". He says the guitar tabs that have been commonplace on music sites for years are "completely illegal."

The effort marks the first time the MPA would embark on a legal effort to protect the copyrights of its members. Individual companies have used the courts to protect their rights in the past.

According to Keiser, the organization plans to go after popular sites that some would think are legal, but are not. The music publishing industry's biggest enemy before the Internet was the copying machine, Keiser said, "but now the Internet is taking more of a bite out of sheet music and printed music sales so we're taking a more proactive stance."

The National Music Publishers' Association is also planning to support the MPA in its legal endeavor.

The industry has already begun to strong-arm lyrics sites off the Internet. Popular Austrian-based PearLyrics was forced off the web on December 6 after a cease and desist letter from British music label Warner/Chappell Music Limited.

The software for Macintosh helped users to locate lyrics to popular songs.

"As a freeware developer I can not afford to risk a law suit against such a big company, although personally I don't see where pearLyrics should infringe any copyrights handled by them," PearLyrics creator Walter Ritter wrote in a message to users on his Web site. "After all, pearLyrics only searches and accesses publicly available websites, displays, and, at the users wish, caches its content."

Ritter is currently investigating his legal options, and thanked his users for their overwhelming support.

Apple news site MacNN also noted in a December 6 article on the removal of PearLyrics that most of the lyrics widgets had disappeared from Apple's Dashboard Widget download site.

Re: No More Downloading From Powertab

This is similar to the perception that "every MP3 illegally downloaded = a lost sale".
BZZZT. Wrong answer. I haven't bought tabs since high school (20 years ago). In the last few years I've grabbed tabs off the net as shortcuts for songs in which I have little interest, to teach to my students. More time for the lesson instead of me sussing out the parts. But if unavailable, I'd do it by ear again; i wouldn't buy the tabs.

Same with MP3s. I buy a lot of music, I download a little here & there.

Re: No More Downloading From Powertab

aaargghhh, another thing that really pisses me off.
I feel so ripped by the music industry today. All these artists and musiccompanies about complaining that sales went down......while driving their xx.no shining car, parked at their second home.
Who f*cked up the industry in the first place?
Back in the vinyl days one could buy a new record (Holland) for 22 guilders.
Let's say €10,- in todays currency. I really bought loads of records back then.....
I liked the big covers and lyric sleeves. Then the cd was introduced and we, the potential buyers, got ripped from that point. Prices went down fortunately last years but sometimes when I take a look in the record stores, we have to pay twice the price of a vinyl record, insane!!!!! Smaller covers, you need glasses to read the lyrics and much more expensive while the production of cd's is much cheaper then vinyl records. Besides that, copying music and such has always been there. In the vinyl days we copied to cassettes, nowaydays we rip cd's or dl them. No difference for me.....
If cd's were correctly priced I would buy lots of them, but since they are NOT and the industry tries to rip us I will NOT.
I support bands which I like by going to their concerts and buy some shirts,
which has become an expensive thing as well.......

LOL. Maybe the RIAA will want to make it illegal to download photographs people take and post online. Perhaps downloading someone's typed opinion will be next.

I mean you can't post a privately created musical interpretation online cause some putz lawyer earning 98 cents on the dollar of what the ARTIST created says it's an infringement of the artist. Very, very scary... glen

Hahaha, , well I'm not afraid to loudly present my opinion about this matter. You know what? We should sew all those greedy musicproduction companies and retailers for artificial maintaining of prices, because that's what's happening and most people don't get that.
