Re: picking problems
I'm with toneboy on the lessons; and your never too old. I'm 37. My teacher is great, he picks right up on all the little nuiances that I do wrong. I would be totally lost if it weren't for my once a week lesson. Instead of spending years doing the wrong technique, he can help catch and correct my issues in a lesson. Of course, most of the work is what you do at home.

yeah i took lessons for about 2 months but my teacher said there is no need for me to be there because of how fast i excelled even before i took lessons, and i can't find another teacher that is really that good. My last teacher was pretty good but he sucked at explaining things so i'm having trouble finding lessons here, anyone know good teachers in sw florida? (mainly in the naples area)

Re: picking problems
Yeah, it is important to get the right teacher; I had one as a child in a cigar-smoke filled basement with 1 light bulb overhead, and played nothing but Greensleeves and Ode to Joy. I'm not doing that crap again.
I can't believe the one guy telling you that there was no need to be there. There is so much to learn about the guitar. It can take a lifetime. This guy sounded like a yutz. I've got a good teacher now that lets me play what I want, but he has a tendency to start jamming out during my paid for lessons sometimes.

I find it hard to believe that any knowledgeable guitar teacher would tell you that you don't need lessons, for the following reasons.
1) As the poster above said, there are a lifetime's worth of things to learn on the guitar.
2) I doubt he would say this after having taught you for only two months.
3) And if anything, he would be losing a source of income...

he told me he wanted me to go to a college prof of music theory but i know i need the techniques better also he seemed to want to play more yngwie stuff than i would of preferred, i ask about a technique he would be like oh yngwie does it in this song I'm like, i'm not really into yngwie...
also i might be getting music theory lessons soon from a grammy award winner who did the sunny and cher show, but i still need a guitar teacher for techniques, arg!

You didn't have an teacher, you went to a guitar player would showed you some licks and some techniques. I'm friends with a couple of really good guitar instructors and they would never tell someone that.
