playing pinch harmonics
everytime i read about how to play
pinch harmonics
, i read about some techniques with picking the string with the pick and then muting it with the thumb
i do it in another way
let me explain for the pinch harmonic for the high e string on 12th fret. i pick it with the pick at the 17th fret and then mute it directly afterwards with the side of my picking hand.
i got pretty acurate with this, and use em a lot.
but never read of this way to play them.
anyone can comment on this? gimme some feedback?
atm, i dont own an e-guitar, sold em all, but the rg1550 will arrive within this week (at least thats what they said). play maynly on steel string acoustics. and i can make my baby squeal like a pig.
see- works fine for electric as well as coustics

I've never picked a harmonic
on
the freatboard, but I tried it now and it does in fact work. I play pinch harmonics using a bit of my pick and a bit of my thumb.

anyone else ever played with this technique? read about it or something?
don't want to live with the thought i've found a new way of playing pinch harmonics, or i'm the only one that plays em this way

Try reading this to understand WHY you can play a pinch harmonic on the fretboard... i actually do it a lot when jamming, though i never got it into a song... it's.. well.. costumary i believe... many times i come out of a tapping lick and since my pick hand is over the fretboard well..it comes in handy...
By the way, picking over the fretboard gives a very mellow sound.. every classical guitar player in the world learns this sooner or later
Be good! You did not discover gunpowerder.. relax..

Ps: oh yeah, using the side of your hand, well, nover saw that, but you just need to stop the string so anything goes... i've tried it with the actual pick and it does work... pick downwards VERY fast and also VERY fst bring the pick back up until it just lightly touches the string.. BLAM.. pinch..
I guess you can use teh household cat if you want.. anything goes :P

thx a lot!
i used to get classical lessons, but i couldn't figure out reading the notes from sheet. i hated it. perhaps i should have started getting lessons before rightaway pickung up the guitar and learning by myself.
all in all have to say pinch harmonics kick ass. i admire alex skolnicks way of playing, and i'm pretty impressed by everything he plays. perhaps its just that u need satriani as teacher

I play it that way...
Pick a note, mute it with my thumb. Works like a charm.
EDIT:
I can imagine my technique would give more of a "punch" into the pinch harmonics. If you care to listen to how mine sound, clicky:

Years ago a friend in school explained how to play pinch harmonics, and I kind of misunderstood. So I've ended up with a weird technique which is pretty bad. I hit the string with an upstroke while lightly touching it with the ring finger on my right hand, literally pinching the string.
It gets some good squeals but it makes it awkward for anything fast as I can only really do it with upstrokes :/
I've tried relearning the thumb method but haven't had the time to get used to it.

That sounds great to me! I've always wanted to find a way to do pinch harmonics using up-strokes. You should learn how to do them with your thumb as well, but don't throw away the technique you already have.

I do it that way, not the most efficient technique, but works for me

I also catch my pinch harms on the upstroak!!
It's a fine technique to use when you're doing strict
alternate picking
. Use it with the old "down/up" method of picking and you'll have no probs with putting them in the faster chops

i just came across the 'conventional' way one day when soloing, the old pick-through-the-string-and-immediately-mute-with-your-thumb technique, and it works absolutely fine for me.
