Re: Practicing too much = slump??
I think the best way to overcome your problem is to pick a really good song with good rhythm playing and good solo combined. Pick a song that will really challenge your capability. Rhythm that require fast fingers change and solo that is difficult to capture but pleasant to the ears. Pick something that is more challenging. Dont play songs that you know by hard and play so often. That will pump up the adrenaline.

People go through these phases, I wouldn't worry about it. Try and focus on something else, if you can. Then come back to guitar and try again.

Re: Practicing too much = slump??
I do know what your saying. I hate when that happens. It's like all of a sudden I suck at guitar. Though, that is probably always the case for me. Speaking of cases...maybe I'll just go get a case a beer. Then, at least, I might think I sound good. Maybe that will work?
Try playing bass guitar for a bit. When you switch back to your 6 string you'll be like....wow!!
I don't know, it's just an idea?

Another idea, de-tune your guitar and try to play like that for while. When you re-tune, you'll have to sound better.

Re: Practicing too much = slump??
I'd leave your guitars alone until your new spangly Jem arrives, then blast the sh*t out of it.
I'm in a similar slump at the moment and have been for a month or so, I've got a nice PGM100 on the way so I'm not going to play until that one arrives

Get on the PS2 for a while, then go back to guitar.

Re: Practicing too much = slump??
You need to start thinking like Tiger Woods. Tiger's philosophy in golf is not to let one mistake lead to further mistakes. You gotta be calm, if you get stressed about a mistake, it will lead to more of them.
So my advice Jimmy, is to RELAX, and that goes in more ways than one.
Make sure you are'nt tensing up, I've noticed that when guys make mistakes, they get angry, they put more tension into their playing, and that certainly doesn't help either.

Re: Practicing too much = slump??
JJEMMER777 the way to stop the slump in you- is to stop stressing out,
Stress is the cause to your condition of the slump in your
guitar playing
& other things you do, take a brake from it for a short time & do a bit of living out doors- stay away from guitars & do something els that isn't related to guitars or music, go fishing or something bro, (get your mind clear) then you will play better
Sometimes life can get a bit too much & this will put you in a diffrent mind set with out you knowing it, then you find your guitar playing has gone out to Lunch & your thinking theres something wrong with you?
Its called STRESS bro & it is the biggest killer on the planet!
you need some time out bro & get some fresh air, it works wonders for your guitar playing & your well being-
(trust me on this & you will see the results in no time!)
Cheers bro- (Doctor- Jake.)

Re: Practicing too much = slump??
Play nothing but acoustic for a couple of days.
Not only will it seperate you from the distorted world of lead guitar, but it will blast you into some rhythm practice, work your fingers, and hone your overall control skills.
After the 3 days or so "vacation" from
electric guitar
, you'll feel like the hulk on the fretboard.

That's a good point. Being that I have a life beyond guitars and music, I find, sometimes, I have little time to persue my music interest. When the free time comes....I stress out over the fact that only have X amount of time to do the things I want to do. This is particuliar true when it comes to composing new songs. At that point, the only thing I can come up with, in my opinion, is crap. Though, some would say it is all crap.
It is then, I do 1 of 2 things. Just freestyle jam and drift off into my own little guitar world (sometimes this is hard to do). Or I just go and do something else.
I just wish I had more time. For me, it is very time consuming to play all the instruments, compose, record, mix and burn them to cd. But, that is the way I like to do it.
As a matter of fact, I'm sure I should be doing something else right now.
Wash the cars
Cut the lawn
Pay some bills
Clean the office
Change the oil
Paint the house
Organize my shed & tools
Defrag my hdd's.........Ahhhhhgggg.....this thread is going to make me go into a slump.
F' it....I'm going to guitar center and pick up some strings for my drop C tuning project.
I think I'm drifting off the topic. Anyway, I hope it helps. Goodluck.
BTW.. if you need something to take your mind off guitar, that's just a small portion of the things I should be doing. I could use some help.

A good way to get thru it all bro is to do one of them things (You must Do) each day at least & tick them off your list of to do things- if you can tick off 2 things to do!, if you have to ( cut the lawn's) today then do them, & never look at the work ahead of you like it's hard because it's not hard it's only hard in your thoughts, You will feel better about that build up of work you have to do if you just chip away at it a day at a time if possible for you? untill it's all gone!
But you must start to do the work so plan what can be done the fastest way & tick it off the list, & if you stick to this system you will have more time to enjoy life, You can over come any work you have to do Just by Doing IT & as you see after the work is done & you will feel good about yourself because that sh!ty Job is nolonger bothering you & those achievements will be a real spirit lifting experience for you which will motivate you to do bigger & better things for yourself.
Get Started ASAP you will be on top of your life's downers & then you can do much more to enjoy life, Free yourself of all those hassles you must do!
it all starts with you.
Cheers.. Jake.
