Practicing while seated

i like to put one of those big tall Christina Aguilera shoes on my left foot while i'm practicing. *it eases the discomfort of my back and makes me feel like a sexy songstress at the same time. * LAAAA! *(singing arpeggios at the end of every phrase.)

have i revealed too much? *ah screw it - it's my thread anyway.

Practicing while seated

The actual reason I am sitting that way in the photo is because, over the years I have always played while standing. I cannot play very well sitting, so I try to sit up straight and drop the guitar down off my lap. It just feels more natural. I do like wearing a guitar up real high sometimes, but even with it up high, I am more comfortable standing.

I was taught to use my left leg, mainly because the guys who I learned from initially played classical at least half the time. *I have tried the right leg just because I have seen so many people doing it, but I can't play that way at all. *I have also noticed that when shredding it up past the 15ft fret or so I tend to really hunch over.

Hey, that's the way I practice! *Stealing my damn method... *

Here's another thing that I've found useful... *While you're playing standing up (when you're really ripping it up, you know... 64th notes or something...) check out where you rest your hand (not your wrist, where your arm contacts the body). *Mark that spot with a piece of masking tape. *When you practice put your arm in the same spot. *Works for me, I find it much easier to play standing up. * *

I think Petrucci uses his left knee on Rock Discipline. That's where I got it.

I study classical guitar, and i have found that sometimes the more casual way of sitting may seem more comfortable, left knee sitting is definately the way to go it seems the neck is easier to play and like mentioned before with a footrest under the left to elevate your knee, playing is ultimately better as well as holding the guitar very close to your body.

I love the position that you have to use while playing a Jackson Rhodes (I probably am not spelling his name right). *The V shape makes you rest it on you're right leg but in an inclined position like a classical guitar. *And of course the design of the guitar makes it a breeze to reach the upper frets.
