I am totally onboard with Gabe! *I ask my wife what she thinks of my playing all the time. *Response, "I don't know; I don't listen to that stuff!" *I played a Poison song once and she thought that it was good. *'Nuff said. *-Andy

I'd recommend you do this:

1)Select a song you like from a cd you own
2)Transcribe it using standard notation
3)Figure out fingerings for that song that work for you
4)Learn it.

Gives you months of work, but gets you off beyond measure when you finally get it under your fingers.
Like Steve Vai said, "transcribing is good for your ear, reading, soloing and your psychiatrist..."
A slo-mo gadget is recommended for figuring out tricky parts.

To really get chicks wild I play the guitar behind my head-usually pentatonic stuff where my index finger 'keeps position' while my other fingers dash around hitting notes and bending them. I try to pull some sincerely passionate faces when I hit the high notes. They cannot help but be impressed.

You two need to settle down. *

We had some friends over today, and they asked me to play. *Of course I start in with my usual warm up stuff (tapping like there's no tomorrow, sweeps, long runs, etc.), and they get bored quickly and begin to converse. *At least *I* was having fun. *
Four notes into 'Smooth', they all spin around, "HEY! *I know that song! *Cool...."

One of my favorite songs, that 90% of the people know is 'LaGrange' by ZZ Top. *Simple, yet subtly, a very dirty song. *
Billy Gibbons once said, "The key to our success is never having a 4th chord." *LOL...gotta love that guy.

I've never been a huge Jimmy Page fan, but I recently learned 'The Immigrant Song'. *Cool tune. *Good for practicing timing. *Well, not like the rhythm to 'Under A Glass Moon', but still...

Chris- 'American Pie' is a GREAT song. *The progression in there is similar to that in 'Hotel California'- it doesn't have an "ending" chord.
Monster song-writers....

I would say either "Drive" or "Stellar" by Incubus, Extreme "more than words" Mr. Big " To be with you
Dream Theater " The silent man" Green Day "time of your life The crappy 2 songs they play to death by Staind...GAWD I hate that F**kin band, but chix seem to like that too... Maybe some Creed stuff ( another I greatly dislike) Eric Clapton "If I saw you in Heaven" or "Wonderful tonight" that should get you started.

GuyCool, I wasn't trying to bash you on the previous post.
Look at what Kevan posted. Unless you play a cheesy known song nobody will look at you.
Have you ever had a situation in which even if you're good technically, people will ask if you can play the latest easy pop songs, and if you can't, they say you suck (or at least they'll think that way)?

I just saw Estoban playing "Unchained Melody" on the Home Shopping Network. *That chick that sits beside him is just mesmerized. *Maybe try whipping some of that stuff out, although I think Estoban gets incredibly ***
with classical stuff.

Kill the guy with the ball makes for a nice solo tune, although people will argue cos of the crazy drumming, you can boil it down to a single guitar playing. However some of the rythm is hard, real tough, but if you don the big black trech coat and paint you self silver - and perhaps even trash a guitar at the end (?) chicks would love that.
