Recommend songs to learn! - Sorry if offtopic

I am looking for songs that you can play with just one guitar (w/o vocals, drums..etc). Purpose: playing in front of a couple of girls/friends. I like Joe Satriani's "Tears in the Rain", RHCP's "Under the Bridge". Does anyone have any suggestions? I am a somewhat intermediate player (fast alteranate picking, a.h's, but can't sweep) , so I should be able to play most of the stuff you recommend. Thanks!

Eric Johnson - Song For Life, Song For George

SRV - Lenny

Michael Hedges - almost anything he does (Fusion of the Five Elements is my favorite)

EVH - Eruption

How about something you compose?

I have a sugestion to make:

Randy Rhoads's "Dee" * (beautifull classical song)
Rodrigo de Aranjuez Guitar Concerto

Either one is great to play by yourself.

I'm not sure I'd start with Vai songs. *For a couple reaons:
A. *his material can be very very challenging
B. *I think it's important to get a good grasp of basic technique before diving into bi-dextral tapping runs and hybrid picking.

start here:
Guns N Roses - Sweet Child O Mine
Rush - Closer to the Heart, Limelight
Van Halen - Panama, Hot for Teacher, Eruption
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama, Free Bird
Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
Black Sabbath - Paranoid, Electric Funeral
Ozzy - Crazy Train, Mama I'm Comin' Home
Aerosmith - Walk This Way, Angel

Steve Vai songs: *from easiest to hardest (for me)
______
Sisters
Die to Live
Boy from Seattle
Warm Regards
Hand on Heart
Liberty
Hina (from DLR's Skyscraper)
Big Trouble (from DLR's Eat Em' and Smile)
Juice (the solo killed me forever!)

these are not necessarily the easiest or hardest Vai songs to learn, but for me they were the most rewarding in terms of what I learned and the joy I got from playing them.

He asked for songs to be played only on one guitar, without any other instruments, right?

How can you play then all those Steve Vai songs?

Unless you play "Ballerina".

well-presuming he doesn't demand a drummer to play in rhythm, I don't see why he couldn't play any of those songs by himself. *all of them are one track lead charts.

Do you want to impress them? *Play a song they know. *If they don't know 'guitar music' then they'll lose interest. *It's just amazing how you can technically play an amazing song that you think is the best, and other guitarist/musicians are impressed too, but when it comes down to it - chicks dig popular songs. *They put emotional tags on these sort of things. *Find out what kind of music they like. *Boom! *You've got em! *Yeah Baby, Yeah! *What's more amazing is the popular crap is so easy to play. *My girlfriend doesn't mind when I play a Vai tune on the guitar, but when I play something horribly easy like Creed or even oldies like the Beatles she starts 'shakin it'! *What to impress them more? *During the solo of one of these 'popular' songs, add your own style to it... improvise something to your style. *That you can get away with, but don't let it crush the 'popular feel' of the song.

Remember, this is assuming they're not musicians or knowledged in music.

I've found that when I play the guitar with my genitals, women are pretty impressed. *It's easy - just tune to an open chord and strum away!

Try to use a nylon string guitar though - the steel strings are a bit painful.
