Relative Pitch

I remember the old piano lessons where they gave you a note and you had to tell the examiner what it was. I wasn't bad at that, but then I can pick out the notes in a chord to help me construct it.

IMHO perfect pitch is great if you have it, but I don't think it is more important than having a good basic ear for music - if you can tell somebody is playing out of key or tune, then great. I think THAT's important. I once had a student who couldn't tune his guitar properly because he couldn't tell if it was flat or sharp. Practice? You have to be VERY didicated.

My point is that, IMHO, if you don't have YJM or Eric Johnson perfect pitch, it's no biggie. Beethoven is proof.

Relative Pitch

I saw a program here in the UK recently about Autistic people.
They had this kid on who got into the piano at about 5 or something.
He couldn't do some of the most simple day to day tasks, but if someone played a tune on the piano he could recreate it exactly and at the correct tempo after hearing it just once.
Obviously as he got older he could do this with some of the most stunning classical compositions.
They said all he'd be able to do was create an exact copy of whatever he heard, but that all changed when he got into jazz and became totally amazing at improvising.

What is this?

I put it down to a stunning hidden talent coupled with perfect pitch.

Cheers
Steve

P.S. They also had a kid on who flew over london in a helicopter just once and then went home and drew the entire city exactly from memory and with the quality of a draughtsman!

Augmented 5/Diminished 6 (Tritone) : No sound, it's just really dissident
The tritone is a diminished 5th. You probably meant that.

One thing i didn't mention about my P.P.

When i hear someone sing or play a note out of tune, my head automatically ****s to one side and the right side of my face scowls and my right eye squints. *It's funny, but it's true.

It also takes a great deal of concentration for me to sing or play out of tune intentionally - sometimes I'll just be trying to goof around and hit a bad note and it's actually work to do so. *I just thought I'd share these funny little idiosyncracies with y'all.

I'm sure that nobody has ever noticed this before, but in the song 'Ain't no Stoppin' Us Now' by McFadden & Whitehead, the vocal on the whole second verse sounds sharp to me. *It drives me nuts. *If anyone has access to a recording of that song, please listen and tell me i'm not nuts.

Thanks
~kenny
