right hand position

What's the best right hand position for fast alternate picking?

That's the position that takes hours of practise and hard work. Putting your underarm over that rounded corner on the side of your guitar might take you there...but standing up it can be a different story.

In my opinion it's whatever position works best for you. Try seeing which position helps you pick fastest. I rest my palm on my guitar, but I know a lot of people would discourage that. Still, I can play pretty fast when I want to. I guess it's a matter of personal preference. See what works best for you.

I use a method similar to Petrucci's...except I usually don't rest my pinky on the guitar body or pickup unless I'm playing on the top 3 strings. Its a pretty efficient method once you get it down, and it also looks cool when you play fast with it!

My best alternate picking is done with both hands. I can't seem to switch from one nostril to the other quickly enough with just my right hand.

I used to hold the pick with my middle and ring finger. It might made you loose some speed with it but its easy to palm mute. The best way that works for me is i loosen my hands like a dead man with all my middle, ring and pinky spread open. It works for me but i don't know about you guys..

Maybe just try using your pinky and ring finger on your right hand. It takes some practice but once you get it down you'll score points for style.
