Satch and Vai tricks

I'm wondering about some Satch and Vai tricks. They do these tricks on the '97 G3 CD. 1st: For The Love Of God: After he plays the main lick for the second time he takes his left hand and messes with the tone, volume, and pickup selecter. I was wondering what he does. 2nd: My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mamma: Satch's solo: 12 seconds until the end of the solo he hits a note and messes with eather the tone, volume, or pickup selecter and the note goes to a way higher pitch. How does he do this? Thanx

hmmm...

I think Steve is setting himself up for the weird feedback part at the end??? If reckon that hes using some weired effect here as it is too marked an effect to be just from the tone/volume/pickups settings.. but with Vai, well you never know

Satch is using a digitech whammy pedal, thats the section just after when he does a load of weired whammy bar effects that has a 'scooping' effect before stepping on the whammy (set for an octave higher) which gives that sonic trampoleening effect..

I have to admit, that solo by satch, to me, is one of the most memorable solos of all time

Yeah i don't know....they both messed with the the settings on their guitar with there left hand. They reached over their picking hand and then set everything. But yes Satch's solo is awesome

is that what it is??? then i eat my words about what i said about it not being that "coz it was too marked a difference..." It just seems like a very weird effect to be able to get by just switching pickups... (that odd reversed deep feedback kinda thing??? or am i thinking of something different???)

Right at the end, when he's stepping from spot to spot and playing with the whammy bar a bit, hitting a different sustained note at each spot. Very very cool.

no the bit at the end of for the love of god, on the DVD, where he makes that weired rising effect... that he almost implies is an animal moving around or something, (pointing in the direction of the sound) he lifts the guitar and throws it around he steps on a couple of pedals before hand and he is in the spotlight, he is also really dripping with sweat as he finishes....

I cant think of atime as of yet, but im gonna go watch it now to find out

That bit sounds like him using a volume pedal to do swells, while having a really thick delay effect on top of it. He hits a harmonic, and he has one hand free to use the whammy bar, the other to do all sorts of weird stuff with ...

If anyone here has watched Led Zeppelin's "The Song Remains the Same," you'll notice Jimmy Page is doing something really similar! In "Dazed and Confused," I believe, he hits an open string, grabs his tuner, detunes (sort of like a dive-bomb), while pointing slowly at the ground as the pitch lowers. Mind you, I saw TSRTS about a year after I saw the G3'96 vid, so I was like "Vai! You ripped off Page!"

Of course, Page was one of Vai's biggest influences growing up, so you can't really blame him

Yeah.....my uncle can do volume swell while playing but he uses his pinky to adjust the volume knob. He does a solo like that, a fast one. Every note is swelled. It's awesome

I can do runs with my pinky doing volume swells. I can do some really backwards whale noises as well by holding the whammy bar with my index finger, fretting with my thumb, and picking and turnin up on the volume knob. Basically if you want to see volume swells check out Van Halen doing cathedral

G3 has always been my favorite DVD and that is my favorite part of the DVD! Steve is using his volume pedal to swell the notes, and just playing around with his whammy bar. he's also got a ton of reverb and some delay thrown in. The next part, you know, where steve is 'robot pulled' back after every phrase, is really really simple, and it's so cool to play!!
