Re: Satch for a beginner shredder

Well,

I started with The Extremist, end up, and jump to Surfing with the alien. Two music with good passages and tecnics.

Now, I started Flying, and go familiar with the frases and modes.

I'm going to recommend too Speed Mechanics for Lead Guitar by Troy Stetina, it's really a really good book to introduce and improve the basic and intermediary concepts to shred.

Re: Satch for a beginner shredder

The first Satriani song I learned when I started playing was "The Crush of Love". The beauty of Joe's music is that he always has a melodic center to his tunes. You can almost head a vocal line wanting to come out even if he's just playing chords. This is kind of a Hendrix/blues thing. In "Crush..." the melody is obvious. A great place to start IMO. "Flying in a Blue Dream" and "Big Bad Moon" are also good starting points.
Get to the tonal center of Joe's stuff first; the more technical stuff will come with time and lots of practice.
Cheers!

Re: Satch for a beginner shredder

As said previously, if you are a jazz man, just about anything off Satch's self titled album in the 90's would be up your ally - Cool #9 and (one of my favorites, but it's tricky) Killer Bee Bop! That album is also good because there's no guitar layering, it's really just Satch and a band jamming.

That said, I think phrasing wise, that album is tricky. Personally, starting with the Surfing with the Alien album was where I started in my shred adventure - the two first pieces I learned to play all the way through were 1). Midnight and 2). Always with me, always with you. Satch Boogie is also a wicked piece, and if you are into theory, his pitch axis theory is interesting reading......

Above all, have fun - once you shred, you won't look back!!!!!

Ten Words is a great start. you can really work on your feel and phrasing in the verses, too.
