Satch for a beginner shredder

Hi,

I've been listening to Satch for quite a long time but I never really tried to play his stuff (I'm more into jazz improvisation), but now I'm motivated to learn some of his songs.

However I know that it's not an easy task (even more so for someone who never played shred before), and this is where I need your help : what are some good satch songs to start with ? Ones that are not too difficult but will prepare me to play his more advanced stuff.

Thank you for your help !

Re: Satch for a beginner shredder

Seriously, his ballads are the obvious place to start.

A Love Eternal from Super Colossal i think is probably his easiest song to learn for a start, also Crowd Chant from that album although much maligned here is a fun song to learn

Rubina is a great song plus involves a good mostly legato run in it to get used to.

Love Thing as mentioned is mostly straight forward with one tricky run for a novice towards the end of the solo.

Cryin' is a good test for accurate bending!!!!!

Rubina's Blue Sky Happiness has multiple guitars in parts but can be played as a single guitar piece and sound good.

To start more difficult but relatively straight forward songs in view of his catalogue i would suggest starting slowly at songs like Surfing With The Alien or The Forgotten Part II. They might sound intimidating at first but can be broken into logical sections to work on.

Good luck and have fun

Re: Satch for a beginner shredder

I think once you can play House full of bullets and Surfing with the alien you're on track. They're not the most difficult, technically, but they do have some typical Satch parts in them.

From there, I'd say give Flying in a blue dream a go. Btw, there's a couple of videos on YouTube of Satch, giving you an in depth lesson on how to play Surfing with the alien. It's probably easy to find.

Re: Satch for a beginner shredder

Oh jeez. Viva li Vida?

Um, you might actually want to start by spending a couple weeks just working on your legato - trills, and 1h2h3h4p3p2p1 stuff and whatnot, just to get your fretting hand super-smooth.

Then, yeah, his ballad stuff. "Always" is a perrenial favorite, and "Friends" is both a great song and really pretty straightforward. Also, stuff like "Day at the Beach" or "Midnight" is a GREAT way to impress chicks - it's technical guitar music that LOOKS cool.

If you're into jazz, may I suggest:

All Alone
Cool #9
New Blues
The Mighty Turtle Head
Luminous FLesh Giants

probably in that order.

"Home" and "You're My World" are pretty easy songs to learn from his self titled album. "Revelation" is also a nice and easy song to learn from the new album.

The easiest satch piece would be "Starry Night"
