Satch's whammy bar trick

Could somebody please explain how he does this? I'm talking about those high pitched squeel-like noises satch makes with his whammy bar. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Re: Satch's whammy bar trick

He's just hitting natural harmonics and moving the bar. Pretty straightforward stuff. You of course and do the same thing with artificial (pinched) harmonics as well, assuming you have enough distortion. Higher output pickups make it a bit easier too.

You can pull harmonics off strings almost any where along the strings length. I've used different parts of the guitar (pickup pole pieces, graphics on the guitar, etc.) to easily find harmonics repeatedly. Just turn up the gain, switch to the bring pickup, pick and walk a finger up and down the string. You'll find them.

Another trick, if you don't already know it, is "walking" harmonics. Do a series of rapid pull-offs and hammer-ons on one string (the lower strings (E, A, and D) work the best). While you're doing this, slightly mute the string, starting at the bridge and move your hand up towards the neck. If you do it right, you will hear a series of cascading harmonics. This is an old EVH trick.

For example,

On D string with left hand do fast pull offs 4-2-0. While repeating this with your right hand (the heel of your palm) lightly touch the string at the bridge and move towards the neck.

If I can remember my VH, it sounds like the effect towards the end of "Somebody get me a doctor" on VH 2

Another great example is on Hordes of Locusts at 0:35 and 2:40.

Satch usually does pinch harmonics with an open G or B string. Just before he does that, he will depress the whammy bar with his fretting and then do the pinch harmonic and pull up.

Re: Satch's whammy bar trick

thanks for the advice, I think I'm getting it now. I can do the little whammy bar thing in the master of puppets solo and that's similar to this.

*goes to practice more*

Re: Satch's whammy bar trick

I just started working on that trick but with the natural harmonics between the 2nd and 3rd frets. Right now I'm finding it a little difficult to hit a good one consistantly to pull back and go crazy with.

Well, when Eddie does it, he doesn't pull up. He just starts out with the bar depressed, releases, then depresses again.

When I've seen Eddie do it (I think on Live Without a Net?) he does 5th fret G string, 7th fret B string, and 12th fret high E string.
