Some help with Music Theory?

Hi,

everyone says that music theory will improve your guitar playing, improvising, song writing e.t.c.

But i dont know where to start or WHAT to learn?

The book ive got is all about intervals, chord building, note reading, song forms e.t.c.

some one help please?

Start with intervals, then move to chord building. Probably go to note reading after that. It's all good to know.

I got this book called The Ultimite Guitarist (it has a writing from Les Paul in it) when I first started playing and I've been playing for 8 years now and I still pick up thinigs from it. It covers from holding a pick to intervals and exotic scales and jazz stuff, guitar effects, etc. I would recommend it out of any book out there.

Re: Some help with Music Theory?

i'd say you probably will need a good guitar teacher or to take theory courses. there is a lot to learn, but learning it in small bits helps you to digest everything.

while it is all very good to know and i'd recommend learning theory to anyone, it will definitely not automatically make you a good player and it won't necessarily help you with songwriting. theory is basically just analysis and notation. it breaks down the building blocks of music into a language so that we musicians have a universal way of speaking to each other about music. i never sit down and use theory to write music. but i may use it to analyze a complex chord progression so i'll know how i'll want to approach soloing over it.

and while you'll be more knowledgable about music in general, the only thing that'll improve your guitar playing is practice.

I think theory is very important if you want to become a complete guitar player. I would say you first start with chord progression then with chord building and later on with scales. This will help you a lot when you are trying to make a solo or even a song.
