Summer song

I've promiced our bass player that I'll learn this song although I don't actualy know how to play it yet.
Is it in A maj ? If so what mode is it set in and do you have any tips as for great ways of learning this song ?

I have the technique/skill to play it but I just don't have enough time on my side to sit down and learn it by ear, your help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Ben

Re: Summer song

Listen to it over & over & over, also watch him play it live. I learnt the song quite a while ago before id seen him play it on the first G3 DVD, found he played alot of the parts in a different place on the neck and saw alot of the false harmonics he uses, like on the intro. Great use of the wah pedal too.

Re: Summer song

The main key is A Mixolydian, however, it modulates to G minor, A minor, and D mixolydian in different places. There is a Hal Leonard Signature Licks series book "Best of Joe Satriani" w/ CD and tab that I used to learn the solo. The CD slows it down to around 80 bpm. That helped me decipher a lot of the rapid pulloff licks. Took me a long time to be able to play it at 160. The rest was E-Z. It is a fun song to play.

Re: Summer song

Cant you guys play something just by listening to it, its the way i learn to play everything, couldnt rely on TAB or music, it takes the fun you mentioned out of learning a song.

A mixolidean eh, Thanks very much ! That's all I need as a starting block and the legato runs seem pretty straight forward.
As for sitting down and learning it by ear.... Ha Ha , That's fine under normal circumstances but I have a business to run, a 5 month old daughter, a demanding wife and I've got to have this nailed for Friday night.

Forgive me for asking for help.

Ben

Guitar Techniques

I have that issue as well, if you can get your hands on it I'd very much recommend it. The backing track is killer, and the detailed transcription along with the playing tips will really help you in learning the song.

Plus you get the blast the backing track loud and pretending your Satch.

Ooh ! Guitar pro format would be great !!!
If you can be bothered pop it over to benegg@tiscali.co.uk

It would save me some time and It'd mean I could have a sloppy version (well at least one good enough to rehearse) down by Friday.

Cheers,
Ben

Re: Summer song

Cool song. One of my jamming buddies and I have been rattling through this track for a while now.

the majority of the song is quite simple to remember. However, just remembering it is a far cry from playing it, even with 1/10th of the feeling that satch puts into it!!

The most difficult phrase is the fast-as-feck legato and alt-picking part in the main solo. Its was far from straightforward for me. Tricky RH timing has been giving me crazy nightmares about it!!!

The legato phrase following it and the legato phrase following the trem bar antics I also found difficult to get up to 160. Absoloute killer. I have the majority of the song nailed at 152bpm on the Powertab.

160? ..... a few weeks yet I think.
