Sweeping vs. conventional?

I'm looking at the Guitar Grimoire.

In the section on 5 tone scales (Pentatonic) it has a) Conventional patterns and b) Sweeping patterns.

What's "sweeping?"

thanx.

Re: Sweeping vs. conventional?

Sweeping is playing notes across 2 or more strings using one pick motion, up or down.

Re: Sweeping vs. conventional?

How do you get your fingers to keep up with your pick motion? I'm guessing start really slow and gradually increase your speed? Lemme know if that would be considered remotely correct.

It's the hardest technique to get the hang of, look around for specific lessons on it.

go real slow at first and practice practice practice.

Sweeping is also the most boring thing to listen to. As most players use the same pattern as all the others. Rare to find a "fun" sweeper.

Trying to explain Sweep picking with words makes it sound even harder than it is so I think I'll let Pablo show you.

Re: Sweeping vs. conventional?

This is a handy video clip if you're just starting out sweeping.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mbx03mP5eg

As far as a guitar technique goes I think sweeping is pretty much the same as two handed tapping. It sounds realy cool if you use it in the right places but if you over use it the you just look like a "one trick pony". Speed picking, Whammy tricks, pinch harmonics, legato etc etc are all realy important techniques to learn. Anyone who says they're are not is probably saying that because they themselves are unable to master them. Just remember that once you've learnt a load of technique that it's important to break it up. A lot of modern players are acused of having no feel/soul as they play too much on the technique side with not enough big bends, vibrato, single notes etc.

At the end of the day you can't beat the 80's for fantastic guitar work. There was plenty of sweeping going on back in the day but it's just now that everyone seems so focused on it.

Re: Sweeping vs. conventional?

Im not a fan of the sound of sweeping but like eggy says, it can be a bit overused! Paul Gilbert uses a lot of string skipping which uses the exact same notes as sweeping but sounds more like 'real' playing to me.
I cant find a clip but he demonstrated this on 'intense rock II'

He has no idea of timing, he's never used a metronome and you can hear it alot in his songs, he has given sweeping a very bad name.
