tapping noise

when plaing tunes like 'midnight' on low volume , i tend to hear the string behind the fret ring slightly, it sounds like there are two notes on top of each other. how do i stop this without a string dampener?

cheers
adam

is this when you're unplugged? The pickups shouldn't be picking up noise behind your fretting hand, so anything you're hearing is probably acoustic noise coming from the guitar itself but not being picked up by the magnetic pickups.
