Yeah let's go for the "stanley jordan" style.

Also, if you don't mind, I will try to tab your exercise in my software Guitar Studio.

Nicolas.

Tapping Tutorial

Devo, would you mind explaining also how to develop arpeggios using tapping? I do like that kind of sound a lot.
And another thing. Even when I lift my finger of a string (soft lift), having the string properly muted, I can still hear that minimum sound coming off my amp, although it sounds clean when played faster. Am I being too picky. Is there a point where you can't go any further? Will it go off by lowering the action, or the pickups? I don't use a noise gate. And I'm clueless.

Thank you in advance.

about the sound when you lift your finger, there is a trick to that but requires alot of work!

I was going to try explain it but even if I do most people will find that it doesnt make any difference whether they do it or not as its one of the finest lines to cross without knowing.

ok......

after you have tapped a note, let the string raise up off the fret but dont let the string off your finger once the string is up to its full height then take your finger off it.

It sounds like one movement but its two, and is painfuly difficult to get right and put into practice, but its become kinda of a second nature to me. and the whole movement takes less than a tenth of a second or so.....

dont let it get to you. you rarely need to get that picky, only when playing slow stanley stuff that has unaccompanied one hand staccato line, and thats as rare as they come!!!!!

Iain your thanks is much appreciated, wasnt sure if anyone was following this :silly:

Steve

Hey everyone,

heres a bit of two hand stuff.

Its the intro from a piece of mine I wrote a while back, its all eights at a slow tempo say 130ish I dont know off the top of my head.

anyhow its a chordal intro to a song that gets very tricky but has a nice easy start.

make sure the right hand chords are audible.

I suggest neck pickup clean with a bit of reverb, Id put the song on the net but I cant seem to record anything with this dang PC Ill keep tryin though.

Enjoy

Steve

Tapping Tutorial

Hey Everyone,

ok the biggest problem I had (and still have ) when first approaching this style of playing was coordination.

I got to a stage where I could play almost everything I could with my left hand with my right, but not at the same time, it was either one or the other because when one started the other stopped, due to a sort of mental block.

so here are some exercises is came up with to try and solve this problem.

E----------------------
B----------------------
G----3----3----3----3
D----3----3----3----3
A----------------------
E----3----3----3----3

Play this chord at a medium to slow tempo on every beat ( ie 1,2,3,4) with your left hand until your really comfortable with it and able to adjust the dynamics and duration of the chords.

now keeping that steady just add one note with your right hand, say D the 15 fret of the B string, sound it on the first beat, ( keep the chords going steady this is the most important thing ) and just let the D note die away.

do this several time just the one note in the right and the chords in the left and make sure that hammering the right doesnt affect the rhythm or dynamics of the chords in the left hand. sounds unbelievably simple doesnt it

next keep those chords going ( I know its boring )
and try a smal phrase.

* * * *1 * *2 * * * * 4 * * * * * 2
E----14--15-----17-------15-------
B--------------------------------------
G----3--------3--------3--------3---
D----3--------3--------3--------3---
A--------------------------------------
E----3--------3--------3--------3---

how did it go. I imagine that even that caused some people some problems for some people.

now trw stick thos two simple Ideas togethor, except change the chord in the left hand giving you a very simple two bar phrase

E----14------------------------------
B--------------------------------------
G----3--------3--------3--------3---
D----3--------3--------3--------3---
A--------------------------------------
E----3--------3--------3--------3---

* * * *1 * *2 * * * * 4 * * * * * 2
E----14--15-----17-------15-------
B--------------------------------------
G----5--------5--------5--------5---
D----4--------4--------4--------4---
A--------------------------------------
E----4--------4--------4--------4---

now try playing the above but breaking the left hand into seperate bass and chords like so.

E----14------------------------------
B--------------------------------------
G-------------3-----------------3---
D-------------3-----------------3---
A--------------------------------------
E----3-----------------3------------

* * * *1 * *2 * * * * 4 * * * * * 2
E----14--15-----17-------15-------
B--------------------------------------
G-------------5-----------------5---
D-------------4-----------------4---
A--------------------------------------
E----4-----------------4------------

this is significantly more difficult.

Ive been playing classical guitar scince I was about 12, only picked up an electric when I was 17, Im 21 now so I guess thats about 4 years or so. About two of them playing touch style but for only three months a year, as I have to grow my fingernails for classical guitar which prevents me from playing touch.

Hence the amount of bum notes on this next tutorial

here she is,

Stairway part one.

I reworked it for standard tuning, but some harmony parts have to be put up an octave later on to compensate.

Tab

mp3

for anyone whos interested it was played on a 7DBK, fourth position on the switch, through a zoom 505 for some crappy reverb straight into the back of a friends pc (mine doesnt work :help anyway I only got one take at this so its a bit ..... ehhhh .....raw......*

enjoy
* * * * * * * *

ps here are some of the other exercises the ones I manged to record,

Exercise one

page one of the shawn baxter piece, slow

page one of the shawn baxter piece, first take quick

page one of the shawn baxter piece, second take quick

the last two have improv'd endings as I made slips in the take and I tend to get a little angry when I slip .......please dont ask me to transcribe them. If I had time I would have done one or two more takes to get em right.

cheers for lettin me use your pc jim!!!!
