Thanks Devo. How long did it take your tapping to become so advanced?

Tapping Tutorial

the Jordan or the baxter???

the jordan has taken me about 6 months fiddling around not knowing where to go and what to do, Ive really only gotten into it in these last three months. (I soon realised there was nowhere to go ) so I decided to transcribe the stuff myself....its painstaking and very frustrating, I find myself transcribing at quater speed and somthimes eighth speed. The intro to stairway is decptivly easy and totally lured me into a false sense of security

the baxter stuff is a sinch man, youll get that in no time just stick at it keep practicing it slow with minimal movement and focus on clarity of each note and before you know it youll be playing it at 200bpm (though shawn only plays it at 140bpm) , I have other stuff that makes that look and feel like "mary had a little lamb"

ps Ill put up the third and final page of the baxter (in comparison to the first two its much easier)

work on the two hand stuff though! over the last three months, even day by day, I can feel my coordination improving and my legato has gone up several thousand fold (in both hands ) to the extent where im trying to learn a two handed "touch" version of "for the love of god" which I hope should raise a few eyebrows.

Ill post some more wakky "standard" tapping stuff if people are interested. It just takes so long to tab it out :sarcasm:

Has anyone tried the Jordan yet???

Let me know when you guys want the next page!

Steve

Actually I haven't tried the Baxter stuff yet. I concentrate better at night time and that's when i'll be practicing.

Tapping technicque is cool but i'm having most trouble with phrasing and constructing a solo to fit well with a song. People have tried giving other people advice about it... LOTS of times but i'm not sure which is the best advice to take. There's a lot of it! I've even tried giving advice but I have trouble listening to myself.

Tapping Tutorial

I just cut off my finger nails a couple of hours ago and started trying to tap again after about a year of playing classical guitar. My tapping was really weak sounding and don't remember it being that weak before. I have to use about twice as much force with my right hand to get the same volume as my left. Is it because I don't have callouses on my right hand anymore? Is there any way to fix this?

Chan - WHAT?! I find that my tapping with my right is too strong for my left! (assuming that you are right handed tapping with your right)

I can only imagine your left being too weak. Nails don't have much to do with it. They're not necessary.

try moving your right hand so your fingers come down closer to perpendicularly to the strings (model you right on your left) , that will reduce the amout of force and hence the effort and increase the speed and accuracy

Steve

ps my right hand tapping is the same as my left hand, but upside down, ie my right hand thumb sits on the back of the neck just like my left but my fingers come round the top of the board rather than the bottom

Devo - I've seen people tap like that but I can't imagine doing it. Is there something I should know about it? It just doesn't seem right and my fingers on my right don't move well.

you can try some of my warm up exercises if you like, they helpd me with the awkwardness and lack of coordination at the start.

-------------------------------------------------------------(12-13)
-------------------------------------------------(12-13)X4--------
-------------------------------------(12-13)X4--------------------
-------------------------(12-13)X4--------------------------------
-------------(12-13)X4--------------------------------------------
-(12-13)X4--------------------------------------------------------

move up a fret and come back down the neck same pattern, this is not legato this is tapped trills so make sure to hammer each note.

I usually go as far as the 17 fret, or so, but youll probably find your hand starts to burn before then at the beginning

here are some example fingerings

1+2, 2+3, 3+4, 1+3 (change to -12-14-etc), 1+4 (change to -12-15-etc), 2+4, and finally 14243424...

that should help

[aside] for those who thought the baxter was too easy, try this, its Villa-Lobos' second study I arranged it for standard tapping there is a bit of touch in the middle and at the end.

Midi File *Ill record it next time Im recording stuff

Thanks Steve,
A great session so far.

Glad to see a fellow Baxter fan too, such a great and underrated player.

Needs to get his new album out soon though, Jazz Metal really needs a follow up, I've had it for god knows how long.

Anyone feel like checkin' him out he's always at www.shaunbaxter.com

Tunes are a pain being only Quicktime and Shockwave, but I would recommend his CD wholeheartedly (though in the gazillion years or so since it's release most probably have it)

Tata

Steve

Tapping Tutorial

hey everyone,

sorry to bring up an old topic, but Im just adding my final little tab I meant to a long time ago.

The nails have grown so I cant tap anymore, and it will be about nine or ten months before I pick it up again.

for anyone (at least one person, *please somebaody tell me I didnt waste my time and webspace) who tried the stanley heres the next few bars to have a go at.

I just tabbed this up to when the rest of the band joins in. I was going to play this at jemfest uk, but I dont think I will I hit way too many bum notes with my dang long nails and I cant cut em short as I cant afford to loose a week or two in practice for my perf diploma.

enjoy

Steve

Yo devo ! Cool stuff. I have always wondered how Petrucci does those tapping things, when moving up on one single string, it sounds really cool. He does it in the fortune in lies solo. Do you have any example of that ?

By the way, now when you are allready up and recording. Why not record a solo to ?
