Tapping with a plectrum?

I was wondering , how do you tap with a plectrum. I normally just use a finger on my right hand, but i heard you can substitute that for the plectrum , ive tried, yet i cant seem to get it right. Could someone please explain how your meant to do it.

You are apparently supposed to tap with the edge of the pick...i never get it right and i think that tapping with your fingers is more effective and gives you slightly more control...

I guess you have not seen Joe Satriani play. He uses the side of his pick to tap in a lotta songs. You can get really fast trills when you play like this. Listen to his solo in Surfing With The Alien after the jet plane sound. He uses his pick to get these really fast trills He is tapping at fret 22 of the high e string while his left fingers decend from the 21st fret to the 7th fret.

If you're asking about the mechanics of the technique, you're not tapping and pulling with the pick (as you would with finger-tapping) you're just tapping. For example, fret a note with the left hand and tap another fret with the pick (you'll have to shift your right hand position to do this correctly) and simply lift it off.

To get really fast with this technique like Joe, you'll have to tense your arm muscles up!

Yeah, tapping with a pick is sort of a miniature version of a blastbeat on the drums. It's about the only time that you should be tense while playing guitar. I like tapping with a pick. The attack seems sharper and more articulate with the pick. I guess this is probably unnecessary, but for some reason, I turn the pick completely around and tap with the back when I do it.
