Talking

the alternate picking lick thread

i'm in love with fast alternate picking (thank you gilberto) and i love playing em as technique builders but i have a hard time finding nice, easy to digest, short licks. so i've shared a few of my favourites here.

i decided to create a thread where we can all post some of our favourite picking licks and learn some from others. or not... you can choose. i just really want some more licks!

here are mine anyway. pretty self explanatory.

Re: the alternate picking lick thread

here's some more.

obviously these are pretty...simple. they mostly follow the same pattern and you can play around and make heaps of your own licks with these patterns.

Re: the alternate picking lick thread

here is another gilbert-esque lick. descending semiquaver run (groups of 4 or 8, 8 notes to a beat) that runs down E Dorian or E Aeolian (whichever you choose, i used dorian in this, only 1 note difference). i only included the first 2 bars, the rest is just the same pattern moving down (or up) the scale diatonically.

i guess it's good cause it tests your scalar knowledge.

anyway, come on people i want some licks!

Some 1-string yngwie picking. You can do the same basic pattern except moving up in position each time, or follow it up with something fancy sounding, etc. Great for speed drills too. It's also really easy to come up with excersizes and other licks based around this pattern.

Re: the alternate picking lick thread

here's another slick, tricky, picking lick for you guys.

i quickly transcribed al di meola's insane riff from "golden dawn" off "land of the midnight sun". the first bar is this little funk rhythm and then it's the alt picking lick. i start it on an up stroke. here it is:
