Those dam modes!

ok, ive spend over 1 hr in this aussie heat and i cant take it anymore. I seem to of forgotten how this works, so bear with me

C Ionian- C Ionian
C Dorian- Bb Ionian
C Phrygian- Gb Ionian
C Lidian- G Ionian
C Mixolydian- F Ionian
C Aolian- Eb Ionian
C Locrian- Db Ionian

What does this all mean again? For memory on the right hand side, the notes are the root notes............or are they? And how did i work this out?
Ive read my book on modes, checked the net briefly, and still cant work it out.

Is there anyone who can SIMPLY explain how it works or something before i go crazy?

Re: Those dam modes!

You're heading in the right direction. I've learnt the whole modes thing, forgotten it and had to relearn it several times. I think about 4 times but now it's tattooed on my brain.

If you replace the '-' with '=' and on the right hand side (where you got C Ionian, D Ionian...etc) replace 'Ionian' with 'major scale', you'll be in business. The only thing your table leaves out are the chords. For example, if you are playing the 'F' scale exclusively, it sounds 'Ionian' against a Fmaj chord, 'Dorian' against a Gmin chord, 'Phyrgian' against a Amin chord and so on.

That's why say you are jamming along to a 12 bar in A (A5,D5 & E5) and you decide to solo exclusively using the A major scale, against the A5, it 'sounds' Ionian, against the D5, it 'sounds' Lydian and against the E5, it 'sounds' Mixolydian. Of course you can change scales when each chord changes to preserve a certain 'modal tonality' but in my opinion, that requires too much thinking for a less dynamic musical result.

I wrote a post about modal playing 'vs' chords like which mode to play against which chord to get a desired feel a little while ago. It's here http://www.jemsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38509

Good luck
