Tips to become a great shredder

here's somet tips that have helped me...

Play scales all the time. *Try doing stuff that's challenging (string skipping, weird picking patterns etc...) so when you play the easier stuff its just easier (that's a great common sense tip from Steve Morse that helped me out tremendously). *Also don't get hung up with the metronome because once you say to yourself "I just can't play fast" is when you never will. *You have to relax. *Jam out and turn off that damn metronome. *It's good to go back to the metronome to learn stuff slow and help keep your timing in shape but slaving over the metronome will lead to mental road blocks. *I use to get so frustrated but now I just turn it off and come back to it later...you'll be surprised at how much easier things are to play after you take a break.

Another thing is to make up your own MUSICAL exercises (this is hard I know but try to practice stuff that could later actually be used in a song...not just random notes).

Good luck!

That should do the trick... If not, buy three pinnball machines and put them in your music room, and then, gain about 50 kilos, and put the tight leather pants on, together with a pink ugly shirt. Now, put a sticker that says australia on your guitar... *Any body knows who im talking about ? I saw one of his vid's the other day, and it was one of the more enlightening experiences in my life... He's ugly, but he's a brutal guitar player... *5 points...

Great shredder....

It really depends, my impression here is that you wanna become really fast on the guitar playing things at death defying speed impressing all your friends and scaring your neighbours.

Well, scales is a good way to go, try approaching stuff slowly and cleanly at first, gradually building up speed. Learn some shred related songs, like stuff from Racer X. That's a very place to start.

Once you've got killer chops, you can then follow Jay's 5 points

Practice is good, but quality is definately better than quantity when it comes to shred.

Practice more challenging things like string skipping and legato stuff...tricky picking patterns are really great too! Try out some Shawn lane exercises....like odd note groupings.

Here's a website to keep you busy!

http://www.geocities.com/graypianosflying/

An acrchive of Shawn Lane exercises from various magazines.

Enjoy...or suffer in most cases...including mine!

Tips to become a great shredder

Make sure that there is nothing that gets filtered out between your emotions/mind and fingers/instrument. Make sure that you're playing what you're hearing in your head. Make sure that the instrument is a part of you. If playing 1234 1234 excercises doesn't help you achieve something beautiful sounding why play it? However, if playing those excercises get's your fingers ready to play your heart out, then maybe it's a good idea. Shawn Lane's excercises might work for Shawn Lane, but you probably have something else in mind musically. If when you pick up your guitar you sound exactly like Petrucci, Gilbert, Satch, ect., than in my opinion something's wrong. If there are no two people that think alike and have the same emotions, why should there be two people that play alike?

Oh wait.. That's how to be a good musician...
Shredder? Play scales and arpeggios really fast.

Disclaimer- The above are my thoughts and opinions, and only mine. It was not my direct intention to offend anyone. If you want to be a Swedish has-been that goes Weedle Weedle Woooooo, more power to you.
I'm not starting to sound like Jay, am I?

Tips to become a great shredder

i think to become a better shredder u have to slow things down , dont fool your self just by playing a bunch of notes all out of key with the a bunch of distortion filtering what your relly playing.
here are some tips
*Dont fool yourself when practicing always play with clean sound. its ok to play with distortion at times but remember that it si only an effect.

*when u find an exercise to practice , play it at a speed in which u can play it perfect *with zero errors, good dexterity and that it is onbeet use a metronome, but do not start out playing fast test your self and see were your speed is ,if u play at one speed and it dousnt work then slow it down till its perfect and work your way up from that.
example (here is a nice shredder lick to start out with not hard at all just slow it down toyour own speed i dont relly knowyour skill level so i dont know if this example will affect u mch ) here it is i got this lick form a yngwie lesson it is very use full and a nice exercise

-----12-13-10-12-8-10-7-8-5-7--5-------------------------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------8---6-8-5-6-- -5-----------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------7---5-7-4-5---4--------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------7---5-7-3--5----5----------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------7---5-7-3~~~-----
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i hope i wrote that right , first time tabbing on computer
so any way practice that lick its fun to play and u can impress the friends if u play it fast ,but start slow.

*practise alot of sweep picking and arpeggios and alternate picking , if u need any examples just ask and i can tab some out.

Notice - i was right when i thought that i had to make a mistake in that tab but any way it is supposed to read as follows there is only one error on it *on the e stiring going up to the b it is supposed ot be
12 13 10 12 8 10 7 8 5 7 * * 5
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *8
so the 8 on the B is supposed to go before the E on 5
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
