TRACK7 summer practise:- Overview

Hey, here is the overview to the introduction you probably just read

1stly because I'm on a Jazz course my practising is gonna be very biased towards that, but the main stuff for tech exercises, chords/rhythm, scales/soloing will be appliable for all genres. If you are looking to get into jazz harmony soloing stick with me cause thats gonna dome up further on.

What I did was say to myself, "What is it I have to learn", and "What is it I want to learn". So I took the basics, chords; scales, technical exercies, and then said what stems from these. rhythm and comping; application of the scales over the chords; and then the technical aspect of the scales and chords themselves - and finally the musical theory that binds this all together.

I then wrote all these headers down on seperate sheets of paper.

So "Chords/Rhythm/Comping" got a sheet

So did "Scales/Soloing"

Thus "Technical Exercises"

And "Improvising/Soloing/ and Theory"

I then went further into each category. Fully writing down everything that i needed to do for each one. I went right back to what the basics are (for me personally).

The following posts will each be detailing each heading. Then the posts after that will be dealing with how i practised each one.

The next thing I did though was to list everything that I wanted to improve, learn, or do. So things like learning pieces/tunes, transcribing, aural and sight reading came under this.

I have set asside a minimum of 6 hours of the day to do varying amounts of each one. I've also laid out a time fram over the 2 months i'm here to do each of them. So in the beginging tech ex chords and scales will be the most..but their time allotment will decerase as I get better at them, and i can introduce the other things. Obviously not everyone has this luxury i have of bumming around honeing my their chops all day for two months so work out your own time scale on the time you have available.

So my list of things to do over the next 2 months is as follows (remembe this is just my list if you are following this make your own)

CHORDS/RHYTHM/COMPING

SCALES

IMPROVISING/SOLOING + THEORY

LEARNING TUNES (thats just for jazz repetoire i.e standards)

DREAM THEATER (i have started a DT cover band so i'm learning a handful of their tunes)

VAI (a selection of Vai pieces i've always wanted to nail)

TRANSCRIBING (various jazz licks, vai's ultra world album, and satch's new one)

AURAL

SIGHT READING

So thats mine, and its all becaome clear and organized :P so try it for yourself.

the next post will be detailing what about chords/rhythm and comping i'm doing to practise it.

Later
